Halftime at Maryland-UVa: Quick Analysis

Maryland 9, Virginia 3.

Virginia radio analyst Doug Tarring says he would not make a goalie switch if he were coaching UVa, even though freshman Adam Ghitelman has six saves and has given up nine goals. He thinks Ghitelman is the team's long-term answer in goal and a game in March is not the time to upset that balance.

It appears Cavaliers Coach Dom Starsia agrees; even when Maryland was scoring several goals in a row, Ghitelman's backup, Bud Petit, did not move from his spot at the end of the bench.

Also, Tarring notes that Maryland has been winning faceoffs cleanly and that has led to 4 on 3 breaks. The Terrapins have scored three goals on such plays.

What an excellent game by Maryland and keeper Jason Carter. What struck me most besides the goaltending and faceoff domination by Maryland was the lack of physical play by Virginia's defense. There wasn't enough double-teaming as attackmen turned the corner to get off a shot and when it came, it was too passive.

The Terps bagged a big victory today. Christian, do you feel they played well over their heads, or could Maryland really challenge for the championship this year?

Dave--

Maryland can play for a championship this year, though I think it's somewhat dependent on their matchup(s) in the playoffs. Maryland's recipe for success is to get an early lead. Their best wins this year came after good starts--Gtown, UNC and UVa. Everything flows from that--changing defenses often, attacking certain matchups on offense, playing with confidence, etc.

I'd love to see a Maryland-Duke rematch in the ACC tournament. UMd looked really tight in the earlier meeting. It would be interesting to see how Umd has grown this season using the Blue Devils as a barometer.

In the playoffs, Maryland-Syracuse would be amazing.
