Keeping It Hot
The Navy women's team has set a record for wins by a first-year program following a 19-8 win over Villanova. The Midshipmen are 13-3 and have advanced to the Patriot League tournament. They face top-seeded American on Friday at 1 p.m. at AU.
Navy won the regular season meeting, 13-12....
The Catholic men's team lost to York, 10-9, yesterday at home in a game that lasted seven overtimes. Really. It took 3 hours 1 minute to complete. Chris Chappelle scored the winner with 2 minutes 41 seconds left in the seventh overtime for the Spartans (6-6). Catholic had taken a 9-5 lead following a goal by junior Kyle Brant, a transfer from Division I St. John's, with 10:04 remaining.
As TFBO2F friend Matt Bonesteel notes, by the seventh overtime it was probably the slowest game on two feet.
The Cardinals (6-9) are the one local men's team playing a home game on Saturday. They host Moravian at 2:30 p.m....
Maryland men's coach Dave Cottle said junior Jason Carter will start in goal against Virgina in an ACC semifinal on Friday. It wasn't an easy decision: Carter had 16 saves in a 13-7 win over Virginia in the regular season meeting. But sophomore Brian Phipps had 17 saves and one goal against in a victory over Penn on Saturday....
Speaking of goalies, Towson plays Johns Hopkins tonight at 7 p.m. at Homewood Field (ESPNU, WJFK). Tigers senior Billy Sadtler enters with a .503 save percentage in 11 games. Classmate Matt Antol has a .465 save percentage in 10 games.
TFBO2F was there when Towson went to its scramble defense against Virginia earlier this season. Essentially, the goalies left the crease and chased the ball as if it were the final minute, even though there was about eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter and the game was relatively close. I wonder if Towson will do the same tonight. Or maybe it will use a stall?
