A Debate Playbook for Governor Palin
It's hard to understand how a vice presidential debate became the central theater of the election. How did we get to a place where this matters so much that we devote 2,000 words to Gov. Sarah Palin's "cute" style of communications?
Meanwhile the pre-debate focus on Sen. Joe Biden -- about 570 words -- compares him to a lean and hungry boxer who must find a sweet science that allows him to attack without attacking a woman.
Second reader comment posted to the Post's Biden pre-debate story: "I'll be tuning in solely to see if Joe can make Sarah cry." Democracy in action is a beautiful thing, ain't it?
"One thing is clear," writes communications expert and author Nick Morgan. "It's make or break for Sarah Palin's political career."
To that end, Morgan offers Palin a debate playbook, a kind of step-by-step preparation guide, which, by the way, is some of the best practical advice on persuasive public speaking you're going to find.
Still, it's a vice presidential debate. Maybe what the candidates should be reading is Exerting Influence Without Authority.
Back to the Wall Street bailout, where else? Stories that contain both the phrase "Wall Street bailout" and "Santayana" already number 304 in a Google search, and that's sure to rise. You know George Santayana, the philosopher/aphorist who said "Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it." (That's the real quote; it's often butchered.)
In the spirit of Santayana, scholars of business failure Paul Carroll and Chunka Mui offer up 6 Lessons We Should Have Learned Already. Carroll and Mui just published in Harvard Business Review an article called "Seven Ways to Fail Big." An excellent audio slide show summarizing the article can be found here.
My favorite of their six lessons from the financial crisis, though, is number five, "Whenever anyone says they've managed to do away with risk, head for the hills."
While you're there in the hills, you can watch the vice presidential debate.

"How did we get to a place where this matters so much that we devote 2,000 words to Gov. Sarah Palin's "cute" style of communications?"
Palin only matters because of what her selection says about John McCain. He picked an un-vetted female political neophyte to be next in line for the position of the POTUS. It was a reckless, cynical, impulsive and dangerous decision. It was a gamble that failed and it will cost him the election.

Look it's not that this debate is so important, it's just that it should be great entertainment. With Biden's ability to put his foot in his mouth in an often humorous way, and Palin's bizarre meanderings and so stupid it's funny opinions, well, how could you miss it?

This will be like a ring side seat as we watch the "TITANIC" collide with the iceburg.
The only question this time is how many survivors there will be.
I'm guess both Biden and Palin will go down with the ship.

The reason we came to this stage about this debate is to see if people are stupid enough to accept this woman as a vice president with no experience what so ever, remember people the world is watching, put gender and race on the side and vote smart if you really care about this country

I think Palin's career is already broken, in terms of national politics. It seems like she was a decent mayor, at least according to some Alaskans, but she is simply not an appropriate candidate for any national office. The more John McCain insists that she is "absolutely" ready to be President of the United States, the more he digs his own political grave as well.

It doesn't matter what Biden does. Even if he sticks both of his feet in his mouth, the media will come to his rescue and declare his performance as brilliant. The fake surveys will show an 8-10 point bump for Obama-Biden. You can't believe what politicians say. Everything changes once they're in office. The only thing that matters is character.

How did we get here? Maybe as a member of the "elite media" you honestly can't see the forest for the trees. This is what happens when the news becomes infotainment--viewers who could discern more important matters don't watch, and viewers who cannot think they can. Eventually, even the reporters don't understand the news, and the "experts" such as they are once read a paper written by someone who had expertise.
How'd we get here? Your paper and conglomerated networks brought us here. Some woman without qualifications looks better than a woman with them, so this is what we get. A stupid country doing stupid things and elected stupid people. We don't even value expertise, and like a mob with torches and pitchforks hunt experts down and ruin their lives.
We are in a race to the bottom, and I gotta tell ya, it looks like we are going to win.

The best thing Sarah Palin could do for her country is to step down from the position of vice-presidential candidate. Her baby needs her and so do her other children. Her dignity would still be intact plus the respect she would receive would be unmeasurable.

Biden is a notorious plagiarizer. I wonder who's words he's going to steal for tonight's debate? At least Palin is sincere and speaks from the heart; unlike the overly scripted Obama bin Biden team, with their 500 advisors pulling their puppets strings.

The author wrote "Joe Biden...must find a sweet science that allows him to attack without attacking a woman." Unless he calls her "toots" or "sweetie" or something worse--or implies that as a woman, she is inferior--he should be able to debate her the way he would debate anyone.

The time is now!
To remind Americans that Barack Hussein Obama is just another politician that will do or say whatever it takes to fulfill his political ambitions. Barack is calculated and methodical about hiding his true convictions and intentions, and uses deception to get elected.
The time is now!
To remind Americans that Barack Hussein Obama had a 20 year association with his religious leader and priest Jeremiah Wright, who became Barack's idol and role model. Jeremiah married Barack and Michelle and baptized both their daughters. AND, we all remember the hideous videos of Jeremiah Wright’s congregation which included the Obamas, damning America with bombastic joy, after the Muslim’s criminal attack on America on 9/11.
The time is now!
To remind Americans that Barack's religious leader Jeremiah Wright used his tax-exempt church to exercise a radical political agenda, and he refers to Israel, as well as America, as a "racist" State. Theologically Barack's religious leader Jeremiah Wright believes that the true 'Chosen People' are the blacks; He believes that black values are superior to middle-class American values, and that blacks should isolate themselves from the wider American society.
Indeed Barack's religious leader Jeremiah Wright is a black supremacist.
The time is now!
To remind Americans that Barack Hussein Obama wants to be president to implement Jeremiah Wright’s dream of a black supremacist society in America.
The time is now!
For Americans of all political parties to come together to preserve the future of the country we love by voting for John McCain for President of the United States of America.

Sarah Palin will hold her own, debates don't really ever offer a answer to a direct question anyway. But don't feel sorry for her even if it does go poorly, she'll fit in at fox news. There isn't a woman there who wears pants instead of skirts or looks anything less then lovely. This is why they all love her. They've been trained to.
One of my first jobs I was required to wear only dresses. Bring me the sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits.

A non-candidate? How can that be if she is running as a candidate for VP?
Your a jackass. Plain and simple. No "evangelical crazies" here, just an objective observer. If the big O and Joe can convince me, I'll vote for them. So far thought the democratic choice for president gets his ass handed to him when you compare his stats to the republican VP. That's just sorry in my book.
Not only that, McCain is the only one that can speak plainly. "Mr. O" so far seems to be following the Clinton, speaking with a forked tongue.

Palin is easily more qualilfied to be VP than Obama is to be Pres. To Sarah C. - Palin's not a mayor, she's a governor... meaning she has actually governed, which Obama has not.
On the chances of Biden making her cry... don't hold your breath. She's been through a fair number of high level scraps already and won the day in most of them.
What we're seeing a whole of here is liberal urban snobbery. A clue for all urban snobs: the country folks are both smarter and tougher than you think.

We are in big trouble. Why are you saying that Biden "must find a sweet science that allows him to attack without attacking a woman"? If Hillary was his co-debater, people would be saying NOTHING. They'd say, "Get her, Joe! Crush her!" Now we're worried about him "attacking a woman"? If Sarah Palin believes she can be president, then she'd better be able to take the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, and take them like a man. Hillary would NEVER have been treated with the kid-glove treatment Palin is getting. Take 'em off and go for broke, Joe! We're talking about FUTURE people, not whether Joe "tramples" on Sarah's "feelings."

It seems funny on the surface BUT the incredibly dangerous and volatile times we live in, not to mention all the ills simultanously raining down on our country turn Palin's choice of a potential president from amusing to absurdly dangerous and stupid. It is another example of how the Republican party and John McCain in particular do not care a twit about the country, but rather their ability to stay in power. Remember, the world is watching and judging us by whom we choose. Wall Street is already in danger of losing it's position as the leading economic power in the world; a McCain/Palin election would demote this country into a second rate debtor nation.
Posted by: Robert | October 2, 2008 10:43 AM
I really don't think it matters, the outcome of tonight's debate. If Palin looks like a fool, Biden wins. If Biden and Palin both look like fools, Biden wins. If Biden looks like a fool Biden wins.
The public already has its mind made up. And, so do I.
Bottom line is she is NOT READY for Washington. There is not enough experience in her corner yet. She might be bright, witty, cute and whatever, but she is not ready for this job. She is in over her head. Way over. And, this is going to effect McCain a lot more than it is going to effect her.
This is a no win situation for Palin and to be real about this we as Americans have much bigger things to be concerned about.
Your not going to fix this country's economic problems with cute phrases and lipstick. Someone needs to take the bull by the horns and get real here.

You all need to look at the issues and read what both candidates have written. Obma is an elegant writer, he has lofty goals which will be impossible to fulfill due to the political base in Washington. McCain is more realestic but he too will fail when it comes to getting the house to pass anything. Vote Vote Vote but quit calling each other names do some research and quit reading this bias rag.

I have to agree. Anyone who would continue to support a candidate who is so clearly incapable of holding an office like VP must really be brainwashed. The problem with Palin is that she's not even capable enough to respond with coherent or intelligent answers. At least McCain is an able candidate, if dishonest, elderly, and inconsistent. This election should be a no-brainer. Unfortunately, that seems to be the problem...

1) She hasn't run Alaska for years, more like months.
2) Obama has run his presidential campaing with more of a budget, more people to manage, and for a longer period of time.
3) Obama may not have a whole lot of experience, but he has a better education, a better outlook on politics, and is more open to discussion and questioning then Palin. He also knows what is going on in the world, and can answer questions with specific examples.

Sarah Palin is the natural antidote for this issue. Her time is now. Support a real person, not one crafted by 20 years of exposure to the Washington crowd and their ilk. Dang, for the people and by the people is not a slogan, but a guaranteed right promised in our governmental formation.

That is still a step above McCain who thought, "The fundalmentals of our economy are fine" and refused to admit that we are in a recession.
At least Obama is aware of the crisis while it is happening, not freaking out and suspending his campaign 5 days after the crisis is obvious to everyone.

I'll take actual intelligence and the ability to learn, thanks.

As usual the mass media is having another field day- this time by stoking the hyperbolic flames of this essentially non-issue. Sanity always takes a back seat when journalists find a potential meal to feed on. More level headed individuals see through the dog & pony acts such as this one these hoopmasters host- but it seems the majority of the public allow themselves to be swept away by these infotainment tsunamis.

For intelligent people to recognize your kind of untruthful rant for what it is. The fearful cries of an ignorant prejudiced person who just can not accept that here we have a truly intelligent capable black man who is going to be our next president. Most of us have moved beyond your kind of old school prejudice and are truly inspired by what we see in Obama. Personalities aside, how can any rational person want to vote for four more years of the seismic disasters that have come under this last Republican administration!

Palin is facially, demonstrably, unquestionably unqualified to take the seat of the 2nd most powerful political office in world history.
She sports an unimpressive education even by the lowest standard (credits cobbled together from Hawaii Pacific College (huh?), North Idaho Community College (uh . . .), University of Idaho (yeah!), and Matanuska-Susitna Community College (what?)). She has a degree in "communications-journalism", yet she can hardly string together a coherent sentence (even when schooled as to how to answer) and when pressed cannot identify the name of a single newspaper she (presumably) reads.
She is incurious to a fault. She appears to know extremely little about global affairs. I doubt she has read a book on U.S. history, foreign policy, or foreign affairs in years and years, if at all.
While reasonable people may debate the degree to which Palin is a nice person, a "fighter", a capable mayor, a hockey-mom role model, and so on, these are not pre-requisites to serving as Second-in-Command of the greatest, most powerful nation in world history.
We live in extremely dangerous and precarious times. Global financial disaster, nuclear war, ecological catastrophe are real threats (to name a few) -- not only to the the U.S., but to the entire human species.
The idea of placing this vapid, petulant, second-rate beauty queen at or near the helm of modern history is, when you really think about, positively terrifying.

Being a woman myself, I was asked recently about my opinion of Sarah and if I thought that she was a tribute of some sort for women, I personally feel insulted. I think that it's so transparaent that the only reason that McCain chose her was to pick up the Hillary voters, and to have a minority in the running to try to level the playing field. But does he think that us women are That Stupid? that we vote for someone based on their sex? Gimme a break,,, that alone makes me want to vote for Obama and Biden!

Funny how you idiots can't remember that BILL CLINTON was a governor from Arkansas with NO foreign policy experience yet you morons elected him president for 8 years. And you have the audacity to criticize Sarah Palin (VP candidate) for her lack of experience? Wow...just...wow.

Eight years ago, the Republicans needed nothing less than a miracle to topple the Dems from the office after the unprecedented economic prosperity the Clinton era brought to the country. They countered Democrats' intellectual brilliance by bringing forward an absolute idiot in Bush. And they won! Now after eight years of absolute disaster they need another miracle to stay in power. This time they have unearthed in Sarah Palin another ignorant, dumb, and know-nothing candidate. And given our voting record, I wouldn't be surprised if they win again. By the way, if Sarah Palin decides to withdraw her name my middle-school drop-out cousin Joe could be an ideal contender for the Republican ticket as he lives right next to JFK airport and all world leaders fly over his head year round to attend the UN meetings. This makes him a great expert in world politics, doesn't it?

Anyone else tired of the promises of tax breaks and changes? Why can't these politicians simply be honest and admit the economy and national debt just won't support tax breaks? Why can't they just admit to needing a more unified nation to fix the problems that we all can agree on?
Or is that too idealist? Does the country agree on anything anymore? I vote to either push all power back to the states or disband the USA into two nations, letting them each go down their own paths.

The experience argument didn't work against Obama and so it shouldn't be used against Palin. The two cancel each other out on that front.
However, beyond experience issues, Palin just demonstrates a clear ignorance of the issues that are at stake in this country, and that is the problem. You would think that she could at least pretend to be more knowledgeable about her partner's voting record.
After the first botched interview with Gibson, one would think she'd have been better prepared for the one with Hannity, which might as well have been a hug - but she gaffed there, too. So by interview 3 with Couric, she should've been able to knock it out of the park. Yet that was her worse interview ever?
In the worst case scenario of McCain winning then for some reason being unable to continue in office, yielding to Palin, how could we possibly expect someone who can't even prepare for an interview to give a state of the union address, or to talk to foreign leaders?
This is not about experience, it is about competence.
Posted by: Godheval | October 2, 2008 11:09 AM
IF Sarah Palin makes it to the VP slot she will not be the answer or remedy for the economy. They will put her back in a closet and take her out only for photographs. Maybe she'll have a Mary Kay party with the other Republican women so they can get on board.

To LC:
I'm with you there. I'm losing what little faith I have in government really fast. Obama seems better at answering the questions we face, but that doesn't mean he'll actually be able to do any of the things he has proposed - especially given the state of our economy. The difference between the two candidates for me is in how they approach issues - and it's best summed up in something Obama said during the debate, when he compared using a hatchet (McCain's way) to using a scalpel (his way).
But, anyway, after trying to read the text of the bailout bill, and trying to even UNDERSTAND it - including all of the legislation completely unrelated to it (like genetic information discrimination and mental health provisions), I wonder if the Senate even reads bills.
The whole government is a mess...

Race is not an issue; unless you oppose Obama.
Obama is brilliant; Unless you oppose entitlement programs and tax increases to pay for them.
Religion is not an issue; unless you disagree with Joe Biden or Obama; supporters of abortion rights.
Obama is an American Patriot; as long as you don't look at his mentors, pastor or life experiences.
I don't care what his skin color is or whether he "feels" more for the poor than I do. I can only say that if you work hard, serve your country, go to church, raise a family and celebrate the 4th of July it is difficult to find fault with you. I feel Biden and Obama want to tell me what is good for me. I want to decide what is good for myself. Vote Republican.

"real woman" "real mom" I do believe that Hillary is a real woman and a more successful mom. Her daughter Chelsea is far more impressive than what we've seen Palin's parenting skills produce. In addition, it is the GOP's simplemindedness that has led them to a decline in popularity. Keep spewing ultra conservative remarks like that one and you'll sink your party even further. DON'T expect the rest of us "real women" to follow you regressive maternalistic idea of what a "real woman" is. The rest of women are all real women and we come in various forms. McCain's thought process behind choosing Palin is obvious to smart women. He assumed that we women are so bubble headed that we'd switch our vote to his ticket because he had any woman on it, rather than choosing a "more than capable" woman on the ticket. She's a govenor..for less than two years of a rustic backwoods state and a former mayor of a tiny little town. We've already seen what average intellect in the whitehouse has done for our nation. America is HUNGRY for brains and diplomacy and new ideas not old ones. Notice how McCain always reflects on the past while Obama looks to the future. We will rebuild this economy from the ground up, not enriching the rich and hoping they'll drop the rest of us working stiffs some crumbs. A strong middle class feeds big business with purchasing power and the ability to pay their creditors. A week middle class makes the entire nation suffer. Let's build and make things again. Let's build "new" things. A non- college educated blue colllar worker has little to look forward to under McCain. Let's penalize those that ship jobs over sees and reward those who don't. I'm giddy with excitement. Both parties will have to shake this one off, but it should make for GREAT television...

"1) She hasn't run Alaska for years, more like months.
2) Obama has run his presidential campaing with more of a budget, more people to manage, and for a longer period of time.
3) Obama may not have a whole lot of experience, but he has a better education, a better outlook on politics, and is more open to discussion and questioning then Palin. He also knows what is going on in the world, and can answer questions with specific examples."
In response to above:
1) Get a calendar. Learn how to use it.
2) So campaigning for President is now a qualification for being President? You've got to be kidding me.
3) You summed it up with "Obama may not have a whole lot of experience". I will add that he does give motivational speeches that are devoid of any clear-cut plan.

1) Alot of people are voting for races this year. Why else haven't we had a black candidate if not for people voting for race? If race was not an issue we would have had a black president years ago.
2) What entitlement programs specifically? The ones that take away the tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, the ones that lead to an economic meltdown? Or the ones that make every american have affordable healthcare? I guess it is easy to think that poor people do not diserve health insurance, after all they didn't inherit millions for their daddy. Also, if you want the economy to get better, then the middle class has to start buying/investing, and they will need to have a tax relief to do so. They have been in a recession for years and finally wall street is noticing.
3) We live in a country with FREEDOM OF RELIGION. Your religion is fine AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT USE IT TO HOLD BACK OTHER AMERICANS. Abortion is religious, and should be kept a private choice, not forced fed to people that don't beleive what you beleive. Why did we leave Europe in the first place if that same stuff is going to happen here?
4) So I guess McCain is not a patriot because he is friends with convicted attempted murderers and terrorists as well. I bet McCain knew people, when he was young, that did not follow patriotic beliefs. So POW or no, he knows bad people therefor he is not patriotic. Do you see how stupid your arguement is?

Very True! We are also ready to be spoken to by a president with a little mutual respect for those who elect him. I'm really sick of the smirky, nasty tone the current President has used for 8 long years, and based on what I've seen from McCain there won't be a change there. The latest interview with the Des Moines paper shows just that. He speaks to those who disagree with him or question him with that same bitterness and contempt. That's not going to lead a depressed nation, or secure allies.

A few things I want from the next President:
Get our elected representatives to do their jobs. They act like a bunch of middle school girls....on both sides. The next president needs to unite the parties or we will never get anything done.
Keep religion out of government. Seriously, have we learned nothing from the Middle East?
Don't lie to us. I know I'm sick of it. While your at it, take time outs to re-evaluate the long term plan. If you are wrong, be man or woman enough to admit it and adjust the course.
For those Americans who are so opposed to "the other side", take some time to educate yourselves about that side. I hope you realize that we're all going to have to meet in the middle in order to move forward.

Policies and past? What exactly would you like us to do? Read one of his memoirs? Palin might not be the most qualified candidate in this race but neither is Obama! For heaven’s sake, are you all really willing to vote for a man who has experience equivalent to that of Sarah Palin? John McCain and Joe Biden are the only two candidates in this race with a past worthy of a vote and the fact that neither one of them are as charismatic or charming as the less experienced candidates pushes them out of the spotlight. Obama’s speeches excite me too until I sit and reflect for a few minutes and realize he really has no idea what he’s talking about but he makes it sound good. McCain is old and he’s not as much fun to watch but I believe that we can trust him to make our country great again.

The only way you can think Obama is not as experienced as Palin is if you know nothing about Obama's history as a community organizer, a constitutional law professor, and over 10 years experience in the Senate(state and federal).
Sarah Palin is a nobody from a small town. She may seem humble, but humblness is not a quality that is needed in a president. We need a president that actually has intellegence and informative decision making skills.

Character is an issue? Between Palin's personal & political foibles as a nice distraction from McBush's Compassionate Conservatism (cheating on-then-divorcing his disfigured wife for someone richer; must've been marriage counseled by Gingrich!), has someone found anything remotely similar on the Democratic ticket? Pls post links if so!
Otherwise, the best 'win' she can get is a sound bite her handlers hope will punch through the rhetoric of both sides. That and having Biden stick his foot in his mouth again for the first time.
Unfortunately, since she can't even handle a 'what do you read' "biased" question without flubbing, everyone already knows she won't have any actual knowledge on issues but what she has been told to memorize by McBush's handlers. Her Kryptonite seems to be anytime a question has the word "specific" in it.
Definitely well illustrates McBush's opinion of her - an unsubstantial distraction. It's sad she has to get over her own team's Sexist Treatment of her before the American public gets a chance to form a better opinion of her.

Homeowner's associations deal with whether or not the fences will get painted this year. Community organizers deal with housing/feeding the poor and providing services like drug treatment and job training. Not even remotely close. You also have nothing to compare working in the Illinois and US Senate.
I do respect teachers (that aren't for injecting religion into academics), but would NEVER vote for one that thinks that McCain/Bush policies are a GOOD thing. "Every child left behind" is just another example of their underhanded ways of packaging up BS to seem palatable for the general public. Like the vouchers they offer make private school affordable. That is just free money for those already sending their kids there...

Obama as a "community organizer": He worked for a firm in Chicago for less than 3 years working with a yearly budget of $70,000 to $400,000. He directed Project Vote in Illinois for a few years. Is this experience worthy of being president I think not? Have you ever balanced a check book? Then you may have overseen a budget of atleast $70,000.
Obama as a “constitutional law professor”: He was a lecturer for 12 years, part-time. He was not a “professor” and he did not lecture full time. Does anyone know how many lectures he gave? I don’t but I’m willing to bet it wasn’t as many as you would like to believe. I think this may have been the best job for a charismatic speaker maybe he should have stayed the path.
Obama as a Senator: 5 years as an Illinois state Senator (he lost the vote in 2000). What was his participation like? Did he do much more than work on low-income issues and African American issues? Oh yea mortgage/housing issues. He has been a US Senator since 2005 and he has spent the majority of the time campaigning for President!!!
GIVE ME A BREAK! And I am not talking about Plain for president over Obama I am talking about McCain for President over Obama. The experience and the records of the two men running for president are at issue and Obama just doesn’t have what it takes. I am voting for McCain and hoping that he stays healthy if he doesn’t ok Palin’s in but I am NOT voting for a man to become president immediately with the experience he has! I am a liberal and I can’t vote for the man because of his lack of experience and his lack of knowledge on the issues.
Posted by: Still Annoyed! | October 2, 2008 12:37 PM
Still Annoyed,
Ok, then lets look at McCain's career:
He barely graduated highschool because he was a jock and a womanizer. He spent most of his time skipping class. When he graduated highschool, he was given a brand new convertable.
He went to the college that all of the men in his family went to, a naval academy. Not to knock naval academies, but they are NOT Harvard level colleges. He spent his years in college being a jock and womanizing some more, to the point where he BARELY graduated. He has admitted that he didn't like learning, so he skipped classes and went drinking with friends. He graduated at the end of the line with a D- average. There is room here for skepticism if his dad and/or granddaddy stepped in and forced a graduating grade.
He then enlisted in the navy. He admits that he hated it. He was associated with 4 planes crashing, including the one that left him as a POW.
After he made it back from POW camp, he was an instant celebrity. He had no intellegence or political skills, but he was a war hero that was more famous then most celebrities of the time. He used this fame to find a rich wife and start politics.
Since then, 26 years later, he has tried many times to become president. In 2000, the republican party voted for Bush instead of McCain. Republicans liked Bush more then McCain, let that sink in. In the 26 years as a Senator he has done nothing but try to stay in that cushion job. He is self described "maverick" because he does not belive in a few right-wing ideas.
He supports the war in Iraq still, even though nobody else does. He supports overturning Roe v Wade, even though he didn't 8 years ago. He supports regulation of corporations, even though he didn't 8 years ago. He voted against raising the minimum wage over 20 times. He has 50 pages of health problems. He does not know how to use a computer to check the internet or emails. He admits that he needs a crash course in the economy.
Summary:
This is a man who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He acted like a jock in highschool, and took nothing seriously. He proved that he didn't learn anyting in highschool or college. He failed as a pilot four times. Now he thinks he should be president.

I am so pleased to see that many Americans have begun filtering through the unsubstantiated babblings of the right wing opinionaters and demanding evidence and sources for such commentary. The Bush fog has been lifted. People can do their own research. Let me offer a boost up for my fellow repubs. If you listen to that pill popping gas bag Limbaugh or that sarcastic smirky dork Hannity or the rude O'Reilly, your information is merely opinion without basis. Step up your game and find sources of information from respectable journalists that provide stats and facts rather than opinions. You know what they say about opinions??
I heard a funny one the other day. Do you know that some people still believe the rumor that Obama is a Muslim who recently converted to Christianity in order to run for office? Even though, this has been proven to be a false rumor among 100's of sources.
What some may not know:
Obama: professor of Constitional Law-Harvard, graduated at the top of his class.
Biden: professor of Constitional Law, graduated at the top of his class, foreign policy expert, served on security council for 17 years and 35 years in the Senate.
Obama: married once, two children, devoted family man and husband.
Biden: widowed, married again, devoted father and husband.
McCain: Married, left first wife after she was disfugured in car accident, married pretty rich woman, graduated fifth from the bottom of his class.
Palin: Married once, husband worked for BP Oil, he is now a house husband, five kids one of which is a pregnant teenager, attended multiple colleges to obtain journalism degree, average student and former runner up beauty queen. Attempted to ban books, made rape victims pay their own rape kits at staggering costs, told us she said "thanks but no thanks" to the bridge to nowhere, but took the money and is currently building the approach road to the bridge to nowhere, she's not honest, she can't answer simple foreign policy questions, can't even tell us where she gets her news, bet it's from Limbaugh, Hannity and O'Reily and she's ashamed to admit it.
With regards to Clinton compared to Palin, please??? Clinton has a law degree, was govenor of Arkansas for eight years, was and is a brilliant speaker, incredible uniter and expert diplomat. Good paying obs were plentiful under Clinton. Clinton left us with a $400 billion surplus that George could't wait to give back to his wealthy friends and bury this nation is trillions of dollars worth of debt. Nope, no comparison here. Oh, and she's not humble either, if anything she'd undeservabley egotistical. She's not used to real competition and is in for some now. I hope Joe treats her the same as any other VP candidate, male or female.

Palin's performance should be quite good---because she is knowledgeable? NO.
Because it will all be scripted in 2minute sound bytes on notecards? YES
It is short answer (kinda like the easy tests in high school). She can read those written replies, interject several mean and insulting jabs, and then jump around like a spoiled brat who never gets called down.
Debate? not hardly. SCRIPTS by the GOP----yep.

Sarah Palin, what is the capital of Pennsylvania?
Sarah- "Well, that depends. Do you mean the capital of the state or the place where people go the most?
"Capital of the state."
Sarah- "Well you see, Pennsylvania is a very open state. There are people in pennsylvania that live in rural areas and there are people who live in the big cities. The capital is a big city where people live and work and ge different styles of haircuts."
"You didn't answer the question."

Most of the career politicians are crooks. Obama is, McCain is, and Biden definitely is. Whether or not Palin is almost remains to be seen except for the trooper incedent. Seeing as how they all like the bailout, which is horrible for the country in its present form, I'm voting for having a hot VP. Everything else is a lie anyways.

It is quite strange to see that someone like Palin can be consdered as a candidate for VP from the first place.
I am not a US citizen and live in Asia now, however, I was in the States during two most recent presidential election period.
It looked to me that W. Bush could be elected as a president due to at least two things: first, what happened in Florida, second, Al Gore's mistakes.
Al Gore who would have been a better choice was denied by many young students around me just because he looked a little bit snobbish.
Mr. Gore should be better than that.
Well, presidentail election was not an election for someone cool.
Someone with experience, knowledge and capability should be elected.
But, many people voted for Bush just because Gore looked snobbish. Nonsense to me at all.
What happened in Folrida is a real shame.
I could not believe such things could happen in the USA, too, which could be seen in developing countries many times.
USA should be proud of the longest history of democracy with heroes such as Washington, Franklin and Lincoln.
However, during two recent presidential election, what I could see was really...
(sorry to say that)... disappointing.
Now, Palin.
I used to have some respect for Mr. McCain. He looked a little bit different from usual Republican. But, I have some doubt on him.
What is he thinking? What is important to him?
Palin.
I feel sorry for her. She must be having difficult times these days.
But, being a vice president of the USA is not such a thing Palin can do, considering her interview with media.
I cannot imagine Palin being a president of the USA if something bad happens.
It is quite clear that she is not prepared at all and she won't be prepared soon.
Election is not a popularity vote.
I like Mr. Obama more than Mr. McCain. But, I think Mr. McCain can be a better President than W. Bush.
For Palin, No, it does not make sense.
Whatever happens before the election day, if Palin is elected as a new VP of the USA, I will be hugely disappointed by the political system of the USA and (sorry to say this...) the people of the USA, and I am pretty sure that I will not be alone.
For many reasons, the outcome of the US presidential election take huge effect on the life of people outside the States. For such reasons I have great interest on this election.
Please, forgive me if I offend you with my opinion.
Please, people of the USA.
Give some hope. It is enough for now.

I hope Ms. Ifil quotes Billy Madison, "Ms. Palin, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. If you think experience is so wonderful and essential, what do you think of the experience level of the billionaires who dreamed up this sub prime mortgage disaster...think they were amateurs?/
What about all the Ivy league experts in the CIA who told the administration obout the WMD in Iraq,??? Or all the experienced CIA Brains thet kept the cold war going 15 years too long because they did not know the USSR was broke, or the Experts in the military who are the best trained and equipped Army ever and are getting their behinds cleaned by a group of rag tag amateurs, or the experience of intelligent Presidents that have pants off sessions with a kid in the Oval office...experience without ethics and judgement only lets one make bigger mistakes faster. be careful what you wish for... the best orator in human history was Adolph Hitler...

WHY IS PALIN ONLY TALKING TO KATIE COURIC on CBS?????? And getting a pass from everyone else????....No Newsweek, no Time, no ABC, no NBC, no MSNBC, no O'Reilly, no Sports Illustrated, no Modern Maternity, no Washington Post, no Bible Times even, no New York Times, no Fish and Game, no Kansas City News, no Barron's, no Popular Mechanics even, no Wall Street Journal, no Chicago Sun, no Field and Stream, no Hunting News, not even each or any of the local papers of the towns and cities she has visited and given the same speech in, and not even Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau Newspapers....only Katie Couric....and mostly softball questions that draw goofball answers....WHY????
....Now we know why McCain wants to HIDE her from even the Wasilla News and the Alaska newspapers, let alone someone new other then who she has always talked to before...
Palin is the new Republican SCUD Missile....You just never know where she will blow up with her silly comments on TV and Radio. Every time I hear her words, I'm hoping it's actually Tina Fey so we can say it really is a comedy routine, instead of her world view.

Posted by: M Ramoul | October 2, 2008 1:16 PM
I can tell you exactly why this debate means so much.
Biden was a horrible choice by Obama, he is a gaff machine... but the media, who loves Obama, has done a great job of covering that up.
Palin on the other hand, has been attacked for simple things such as not being specific about what newspaper she reads.
This debate brings both of those candidates up front to the american people, and those people could see a couple of very important things.
They could see Biden make another ridiculous gaff, and that would be bad, without the media there to cover for him. If Palin catches the gaff and calls him on it, he will be done for. He needs to work very hard at not doing that. Just answer the questions, don't attack Palin, and DON'T gaff.
Palin though, could be stumped on any number of questions. That would look bad, and confirm that she was a bad choice for McCain. But she is good at connecting with the people, and if she can do that well, and not be truly stumped on anything, then it would confirm that McCain made a good choice, and didn't just choose her on a whim. She certainly has more experience debating than a lot of people have mentioned.
This debate is important because it could make Obama's decision making look bad (people may think he should have chosen Hilary) and McCains decision could look bad as well (as if he didn't vet her properly). If Biden wins that doesn't necessarily change Obama's numbers, but he will def not go down in the polls. If Palin wins then that would be a large boost for McCain.

"The reason we came to this stage about this debate is to see if people are stupid enough to accept this woman as a vice president with no experience what so ever, remember people the world is watching, put gender and race on the side and vote smart if you really care about this country"
I guess this ousts Obama also. Since his voting records contradict nearly his entire platform of "change, bipartisanship and unity" his race obviously is a major factor in why people think he's qualified. Unless the most liberal senator in the US senate and a record of being even more left than most of the Illinois senate means bipartisanship.

Posted by: jones | October 2, 2008 10:40 AM
Actually, the REAL question is does Palin have the CAPACITY to be President if needed. The answer to that is glaringly obvious. The same can be said of John McCain, experienced, yes, capable, NO. Obama and Biden on the other hand are capable. The difference in brains between the two tickets is huge.
Posted by: John | October 2, 2008 1:23 PM
Maybe Mr. hairplugs can avoid talking about how you have to have an indian accent to go into 7-11 or dunkin donuts, how Obama is the first articulate black man, how his chopper was forced down in Pakistan, how he was shot at in Iraq, etc etc etc.
I think its funny how the Obama supporters made a HUGE deal out of the Hillary Bosnia sniper incident then don't have the same attitude about 2 seperate incidents where Biden said basically the same thing.
Most Obama supporters are proving to be shortsighted, greedy, hypocritical bottom feeders though so I'm not surprised.

If Gwen Ifill starts with a question to Biden like: "Joe, How will you and Barack improve the United States leadership standing in the world when elected in November?" And then asks Palin: "Sarah, what is your favorite moose recipe?" === Then I guess the bias will truly show.
But if the questions are to both: 1) Should religion and government remain separate? 2) Should the next Supreme Court Justice uphold or overrule Roe v. Wade? 3) When should the U.S. give Iraq back to the Iraqis as a sovereign nation? 4) Should the U.S. become energy independent, and how best to accomplish this? 5) Should healthcare be available at a reasonable price to all Americans? 6) How would you address the immigration issue? 7) Should a college education be affordable for our kids? 8) How do you suggest we expand good paying jobs in the U.S.? 9) Should we finish the job in Afghanistan and catch Osama bin laden no matter where he is found? 10) Should we as America work and lead for world peace or world war?
I'm betting we'll see professional questions...I'm hoping we see professional answers too.

How [did] a vice presidential debate became the central theater of the election?
When someone ACTING like they have what it takes to be VP entered the race.
Anyone who has watched any of her THREE interviews with an open mind shudders at the possibility that the Palin-McCain ticket might actually win.
I hope she continues on her crash & burn path and that there are enough open-minded voters out there to testify to her inadequacy on November 4th.

"Race is not an issue; unless you oppose Obama.
Obama is brilliant; Unless you oppose entitlement programs and tax increases to pay for them.
Religion is not an issue; unless you disagree with Joe Biden or Obama; supporters of abortion rights.
Obama is an American Patriot; as long as you don't look at his mentors, pastor or life experiences."
1) Alot of people are voting for races this year. Why else haven't we had a black candidate if not for people voting for race? If race was not an issue we would have had a black president years ago.
I do not agree with your base assumption. The Reverend Sharpton and Jessie Jackson sucked so much oxygen from the Political atmosphere that it did cause most onlookers to pause prior to putting a black candidate forward as an electable prsident (just my assumption) I am glad we have a diverse ticket on both sides of the election. Should have happened sooner. (Think Rice and Steele)
***************
2) What entitlement programs specifically? The ones that take away the tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, the ones that lead to an economic meltdown? Or the ones that make every american have affordable healthcare? I guess it is easy to think that poor people do not diserve health insurance, after all they didn't inherit millions for their daddy. Also, if you want the economy to get better, then the middle class has to start buying/investing, and they will need to have a tax relief to do so. They have been in a recession for years and finally wall street is noticing.
********************
Wow - what a rant. No, I suggest you get a job and pay your way in life. Economic meltdown? I guess you mean to say that the republicans are so mean that they forced Fannie and Freddie to give out loans to the unqualified - dang. Tax cuts - you surely don't mean the ones that generate more business and jobs. Health insurance - absolutely - no more trips to the Emergency room with a cold, costing taxpayers millions in every large hospital every year. Middle class - I guess that means everyone that works for a living - no fat cat daddy paying the way - That is the vast majority of us. I want to keep what I earn and support charity that I can judge the result of.
*************************
3) We live in a country with FREEDOM OF RELIGION. Your religion is fine AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT USE IT TO HOLD BACK OTHER AMERICANS. Abortion is religious, and should be kept a private choice, not forced fed to people that don't beleive what you beleive. Why did we leave Europe in the first place if that same stuff is going to happen here?
***********************
Abortion is religious?
I assume that most people would disagree with that statement.
The vast majority of people will wreck their car avoiding a creature on the road, yet you espouse killing an unborn child or not as an act of religious preference. What a load of crap.
***********
4) So I guess McCain is not a patriot because he is friends with convicted attempted murderers and terrorists as well. I bet McCain knew people, when he was young, that did not follow patriotic beliefs. So POW or no, he knows bad people therefor he is not patriotic. Do you see how stupid your arguement is
*************
Total bull. Semperfi
************
Tim,
you are vociferous in your beliefs, just misguided. We all have opinions and in politics some feel that there is not a right or wrong. That is a mistake, go live in another country for a while - it will make you appreciate what we have. Obama and the very liberal group that he fronts for is not the force I want to lead this country. I do hope there are enough voters that can overcome their apathy to vote when it counts.
Vote Republican.

“Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
George Santayana
Yes, Santayana is one of my favorites too. His words have the special surgical, cynical precision of the Spanish intellectual. Here’re a bunch of his quotes that seem written for our times and people. In parentheses, I identify the person or group to whom I think the aphorism best applies.
"America is a young country with an old mentality." (severe social and economic inequality associated with 19th century Europe, in 21st century USA)
"Fanaticism consists of redoubling your effort when you have forgotten your aim." (Palin, re: aerial wolf slaughtering. McCain, re: dramatic tonal changes in campaign and "suspension")
"Skepticism, like chastity, should not be relinquished too readily." (Palin, her unchaste daughter, and Palin's attitudes about science)
"The Bible is a wonderful source of inspiration for those who don't understand it." (Widespread hypocrisy of religious fundamentalists, such as Evangelical acceptance of Palin's nonsubservience to her husband, but strict literalism elsewhere)
"To delight in war is a merit in the soldier, a dangerous quality in the captain, and a positive crime in the statesman." (McCain, Cheney, Bush, Rice, neoconservatives in Bush government)
"Wealth, religion, military victory have more rhetorical than efficacious worth." (tenets of Republican "base")
I did in fairness look over Santayana's quotes for some possible jabs at Obama and/or Biden. They are deserving, as are all politicians. Unfortunately, these Democrats have flaws (from Santayana's perspective) of a more personal, rather than ideological, nature. Santayana, were he alive today, would probably support third party candidates, or, grudgingly, Obama.

Bush's economic advisor, Phil Graham, wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks take risks with all of our future. Now Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy, and McCain will make him the next secretary of the treasury. No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time bush met with his economic advisors, in March, he didn't realize that anything was wrong, or didn't care. Phil Graham now has the guts to say we are in a recession, after he helped create the worst economy since the Great Depression.
As bad as Bush has done McCain would be incredibly worse because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like Bush did but a tanking economy and a 11,000,000,000,000 deficit, most of which Bush created. It will take decades to pay it back.
The Government Accountability Office (GOA) study on corporate tax liability found 2/3 of US controlled and foreign-controlled domestic corporations reported on tax liability between 1998 and 2005. Nearly 50% of these corporations had gross receipts of $50 million, or $250 million in assets. Americans are taxed when they earn their money and they are taxed again when they spend their hard-earned money. Yet, corporations making millions live lavishly in a government tax free zone. How does a corporation bring in $50 million in receipts, yet owe no tax? How does a corporation afford $250 million in assets, yet owe no tax? Loopholes in the tax codes designed to eliminate tax liability for corporations. Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
McCain doesn't understand the economy. That’s not just my opinion, it's his words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it, he does not understand exactly what is broken. Remember, it's not just McCain that would take office -- it's all of the Bush/McCain advisors and party leaders that have been in power during the last 8 years that would continue to run the show behind the curtains.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time. So why are the polls even close? The chairman of McCain's campaign recently said that people don't vote on issues. They vote on a personality composite. He is trying to sell you personality instead of substance. He believes people will vote against there own self interests.
Lets teach him them we are smarter then that.

Bodacious behind? Sir/Madame? If you're serious in your assessment, then it's clear what your voting standards are. If you think that voting doesn't require more than an opinion of a woman's behind, then perhaps you should either stay home on November 4th or start taking this more seriously. Are you not an American who treasures the right to vote that so many in other countries do not have?

For as young as she is, Palin is suprisingly outdated in her education.
She didn't get the memo that creation is not science. She wants it taught in biology classes.
Creation in schools? Are you serious? Isn't this the 21st century? Should we include stories about the toothfairy, unicorns, and sasquatch as well?

BTW I miss GOP's one line comments as I scrolled down the drivel.
And one last comment. I have been a die hard republican since I could vote (since 1978) this year? Easy choice. McCain is an idiot if he thinks that Palin is a good choice as his running mate.
I think Hillary put him up to it (I know they are different parties) She thinks she should be president so having McCain lose is as close as she can get this round.

How can people call Barack Obama just another politician when John McCain has been sucking off the countries nipple for the past 30 years. McCain has never had to work for anything in his life...his Father and Grandfather were admirals in the Navy and that guaranteed his survival through the Naval Academy. Of course he almost flunked out anyway. Then besides crashing planes he was stupid enough to get captured by the Viet Cong. Of course his capture enabled him to make his career on his POW status. I am sick of hearing about him being some kind of war hero...the guy is a joke. I was in the Army so I have some experience when it comes to the armed services. Palin is another story all together. She has to be the most unintelligent candidate to ever grace the national stage..of course Bush would be a close second. Wake up people... this shouldn't even be a contest.

"Like the vouchers they offer make private school affordable. That is just free money for those already sending their kids there..."
Actually these vouchers would allow low income people to have a choice in their kids education. However of course the elite liberals couldn't have any poor or brown people going to school with their gifted children.
A lot of liberals send their kids to catholic schools (funny in itself considering they hate any sort of "values" or "morals" for ANYONE ELSE'S CHILDREN) meanwhile making policies that trash the public school system for all the "little people." Gotta love the hypocritical liberal leaders and the naive sheeple that follow them.

Palin has been a boost for McCain's campaign, no doubt.
But seriously, is she really anything other than a politically motivated puppet to inject life into a flagging campaign? The Palin choice speaks more to McCain's priorities and a poor decision that is not in the U.S.A.'s interests.
I feel that I've fallen down a rabbit hole into some alternative dimension where the election is being conducted like a national American Idol - no substance, cheap shots, outright misrepresentation and media manipulation, all aimed at a voting public with the attention span of a gnat.
Palin is probably a very fine person and a good city council official or even a small-town mayor. But really, if illness befalls McCain, could anyone with some grasp on reality see this person stepping in to the role of the leader of the free world?
The debate preparation has no doubt focused on teaching Palin to recite, parrot-fashion, suitable buzz words and folksey phrases in a hope to avert criticism. Sadly, it may well work.
Please America, wake up and demand some substance in this political process.

People will be watching this debate for the same reason they watched SNL and Tina Fey. Palin is comedy. She is past the point where anyone will take her seriously, unless they fall into that unfortunate category of True Believer My Candidate Right or Wrong.
Basically we know in advance how this will go. She will have a limited number of talking points memorized in advance, and regardless of the question actually asked, she will parrot one of the prepackaged responses her handlers have prepared.
We can only hope that she will be baited into forgetting her lines or wandering off script.
The same can be said of Biden. He is pretty smart but he has made some pretty impressive blunders of his own recently, rewriting history and getting the dates of television coverage and who was president when quite wrong, or the wheelchair "stand up" moment. When it is over we will analyze who provided the most comedy. The bushies will jump all over the Biden slip ups and declare victory, and the obama crowd will have a lot of fun each time Palin demonstrates her sub-quayle
mental acumen.
I have no doubt that Biden will make some blunders, but despite that, I think the net effect will be that we will be terrified of the prospect of Palin installed as VP. But there is no Palin blunder big enough to convince the True Believers that her intellectual curiosity is less than Bush's and her mental capacity is deficient. There is that significant percentage of the populace that has already determined to justify their racism by vilifying Obama and working toward his defeat by any means, even it it comes to voting for a bumbling and incompetent governor of Alaska.

Cryos: "Actually these vouchers would allow low income people to have a choice in their kids education. However of course the elite liberals couldn't have any poor or brown people going to school with their gifted children."
Do you actually believe that low income people can afford private school tuitions even with these vouchers? I wish it were so, but it's not.

Would someone (gender not an issue), be a good international political leader, if they think sarcasm is a good tool? Palin seems to like that approach.

@ Manolete
Your blatant racism is showing. You keep using Barrack's middle name as if it means something other than his middle name? Are you implying something, or are your racist against people of Middle Eastern descent as well as blacks? FYI, the name Hussain is a very common name in Middle Eastern societies.
The Time is Now! To end racism.

The reason it's so important is because Palin is so deliberately different than the lockstep, narrow-minded, supposedly-free-to-choose-your-own-way-but-not-really, left wing nut crowd, that she raises genuine interest.
Biden (and Obama, for that matter) is garden variety Washington D.C., stale, mold-encrusted Liberalism and everyone already knows what that is and how it never works. (also explains why only two Democrats have been elected president in the last 50 years)
And truthfully, Obama's appeal is only that he has given a fresh verbiage, and a new face to the old Liberalism that never works - proving yet, again, that repackaging old merchandise and labeliing it with "NEW & IMPROVED" will always convince those who fail to think past the outer trappings.
If Palin stands firm to Biden - you Democrats need to brace for a rough and disappointing ride to November 4 - because people genuinely like her. If not, you will rejoice as America stumbles into a new era of Liberal malaise that will produce another Jimmy Carter one-term failure.

The big deal about Palin is that McCain is probably too old and in too poor health (and, some conspiracy theorists posit, too far outside the Republican mainstream) to be terribly likely to survive to 77 (he's currently 73). So she really is potentially the president; more so than Biden, I think people should evaluate her that way.
It's ridiculous and offensive to talk about Biden being worried he'll make her cry. Where do I even start with that? Just because she's a woman, she's going to cry during a national debate? It's so offensive to even suggest it.
Besides, she would have to have a heart for that to happen, and the rape kit issue pretty much sealed the deal for me on that question.
Posted by: osh | October 2, 2008 1:47 PM
Obama and Biden both have considerable knowlege of constitutional law. I think that's important especially in light of the past 8 years.

John A: "The debate preparation has no doubt focused on teaching Palin to recite, parrot-fashion, suitable buzz words and folksey phrases in a hope to avert criticism. Sadly, it may well work."
Yes, very true. The Rovian maneuver yesterday in talking about Ifill's new book (in which she brings up both Obama and Colin Powell) was a set up. Both McCain his lap dog Rudy said, sure, she's a professional and will handle it. Yet they sowed the seeds of doubt in expressing that there is a "concern." Now, if Palin doesn't perform well, even the low expectations the public has of her, it will be either that Biden was too aggressive or Gwen was partisan. They will be looking for someone else to blame, as usual.

After reading these comments, does anyone have any doubt why this country is in so much trouble? Respect for others is dead. No one seems to want a debate, they want a circus. Who will win, who will lose is irrelevent. We have already lost.

Anybody with a shred of intellectual integrity by now has to admit that Palin is disastrously unqualified to be VP to the oldest man ever to run for a first term as president. In choosing her, McCain cynically and recklessly reneged on the promise he made to the American people before her selection that his VP pick would be "Ready from day one" to assume the presidency.
This is only one of the last — but perhaps the most dangerous — of a long series of reckless choices McCain has made throughout his adult life. This Rolling Stone piece makes interesting reading and lays out the case for rejecting McCain as being a dangerous choice: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/23316912/makebelieve_maverick/print
Fortunately the American electorate has seen through the entire cynical McCain campaign and in particular the Palin pick. Among independent voters and women her negative numbers already exceed her positives. Only the rabidly religious segment of the Republican base still believes in her in any numbers.
McCain has destroyed for ever the meaning of the slogan "Country First" and has shown himself to be driven only by personal ambition — as he has been throughout his career.

YAY TO DEREK WHO WROTE:
"The Government Accountability Office (GOA) study on corporate tax liability found 2/3 of US controlled and foreign-controlled domestic corporations reported on tax liability between 1998 and 2005. Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us."

People think she is a complete tool. She is dumber than Bush, and Bush would have a 0% chance on getting in politics on a national level. After all this redneckery he created in the White House.
At least he has graduated Yale, and Harward. Palin, on the other hand went to 6 schools in 6 years, and majored in journalism. Journalism?
As many beautiful airheads she had aspirations to become a Television anchor, but I guess that was a pipe dream.

It is sad to me that so many people get caught up in the windfall of the media and fail to follow real policies. Change is what Obama is going to do right? Sarah Palin like her or not, has done exactly that. In fact she has taken on very powerful people in her state and didn't back down and to me this is impressive, but none of you will read about her so it doesn't matter. Vote for your celebrity and then be first to start whining when terrorist attack again like I know you will. I'm really disappointed by people here that truly believe they should get something for nothing. Pay more taxes, bigger government, tax the rich who when have more money create businesses. What do the poor do with more money, buy a trampoline. Maybe I will buy stock in a trampoline company........ Tax the corporations so they send jobs overseas. And sign your name or don't write anything at all.

HEY! I'm not a Palin supporter by any means, but some of us get a very good education even if we move around a bit. There's lot of ways to get a good education and that shouldn't disqualify her. What DOES disqualify her is her inability to answer questions that we'd expect her to know for the job she is applying for. After all, if I bring someone on board who is not qualified in my company that would show poor judgment on my part and lower my credibility.

Well to all you Democrats out there. When McCain is president and Sarah Palin is Vice president. You know the to people that have always been proud to be Americans’, not just when one of their significant others is running for office. Yeah those two, Barack if he was to win, he will run this country into the ground worse than bush ever did. He is Curious George looking idiot who is telling you what you want to hear and is going to do another(typical politician), but if you Democrats believe his lies, go ahead. He was/is a member of the very white hating church, lets over look that he is Barack Obama that has the media doing all his bidding for him, while McCain is working his tail off to get "a" point across. McCain picked his running mate because she is a woman at every sense of the word woman, she has strong morals and is a good speaker, so evangelist’s like her damn, don’t want those select few evangelist that actually have morals like a woman for VP because she herself has morals. Besides it is about time a woman can come step in and help run this country alongside a great man unlike Obama who hasn't actually done anything for his country. She and McCain gave more leadership to this country than Obama and Biden ever have and will. McCain is old so he was of age to go to war and serve his country ok sure. But if Obama was a POW, he would have jumped ship just like the coward he is. Sara Palin isn't scared to drop the hammer, if you have a talker and not a doer then we are in for a take over of this country. Don't forget Democrats some of your congressman/representatives had their hand in to what happened to this country Don't blame McCain for everything GW did, if that’s the case Barack is going to get a blow job in the white house because he is a Democrat. Women gave this country our greatest men if they can give birth to them they sure as hell can run this country with honesty, integrity, and with no fear. To any negative people out there trying to outdo this post you are probably a no count, everything in your momma’s name, Tax evading, well-fare jobless country killing, LOSER. So you remarks are useless. Read and take it all in.

Thomas: I think you misunderstood my comment. It doesn't take a Harvard or Yale grad to be our commander and chief and it doesn't necessarily make them qualified for any government position. However, if something happens to McCain, then Palin would be President. Given McCain's age and health issues, a discussion of Palin's qualifications is both important and relevant.

Moringstar - I know you would like to think George Bush destroyed the country but the fact is that it happened over a very long period of time and the fact is that Congress is the one that passes laws not Bush. I would have to say a lot of Politician's had their hand in it not just one person.

But, we can blame him for pulling us into an unjust war and everything that he IS reponsible for but refuses to acknowledge it. That is what I blame him for.

Change?
Choose between We feel your pain Democrats and Lets get to work Republicans.
Democrat High ground - help every one up from the bottom - eg...give them a house or at least help them get into a home with incentive by congress to Freddie and Fannie. I think history has shown over and over that if you are not willing to work and save for something yourself it has no real value to you.
The down side to the Democrat high ground -it allowed greedy lenders and certain security brokers (both parties) to package high interest packages that blew up in everyones 401K's.
Republican High Ground - Fight Islamic terrorism - wherever it is located.
The downside to the Republican High Ground - Choosing to centrally locate the battle ground in the middle of the middle East, while knocking out an old adversary - Easier said than done. Very expensive - lots of cost in men and materials - poor management of the war (Best laid plans).
We are in a war, no matter what happens in the election. It is fundamental Islam against the Western Culture.
Understanding what American Core Values are and fighting to maintain those values is of utmost importance. Do not be ashamed to salute our flag and learn from our mistakes. Asian, Latino, Black, White and a good mixture of Others (according to the census) have a vested interest in our melting pot. We are one people - all american, we just use a different set of spices.
Sarah Palin is a good choice for VP. She will learn on the job (quickly). She does have energy experience - one of our biggest challenges. She does have core American beliefs. Bear with me here.
America is religious at it's core. A religion of free will based on the Constitution. Our capital is a great center in the worship of Western Civilization that respects all people and their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
I truly believe that the Democratic Party I grew up in does not exist anymore. I vote Republican because it more closely resembles the party that supports the core beliefs of our Constitution.
The Supreme Court Justices that McCain and Palin will replace (hopefully) need to rule based on existing law not creating new law from the bench.
That's a good reason to vote Republican.

Joe Bob, I'm in the lending business and have been for 20+ yrs. Allow me to school you. Subprime borrowers and Brokers have been used a skapegoats to cover the butts of the decision makers who introduced rediculous products to the market place for one purpose...greed. There's a lot of money to be made in lending when you get an approval. We hit a point when almost anyone could be approved and the borrowers didn't create the products, didn't understand the products and the lenders that approved the loans eliminated their risk and accountability by breaking a single loan into 100's of pieces called mortgage backed securities. The loan is no longer owned by one company, it's owned by 100's of investors and the risk is spread so thin that no one was accountable until it all blew up in their faces. You see, they actually believed that double digit appreciation could sustain. If it had, no one could afford a home in a few years...boom! This ability to break these loans up like this occured in the last decade due to deregulation thanks to folks like Bush and McCain. Let's not forget that job loss and declining wages combined with increased healthcare costs and increased everything costs have squeezed these once sustainable household budgets to a budget deficit. Then they defaulted on their loans. The subprime thing has worked its way through the system. Now, what you see are prime borrowers defaulting. This isn't just deadbeats defaulting on loans they couldn't afford. It's good people suffering. People who once have a good job and now all that's out there are temp and low paying jobs or no jobs at all, unless you want to sell something or work in the medical field. Like I said before, the blue collar worker makes this country go 'round. Ignore and dismiss him and you'll get what we have now.

People, edit your comments before submission. There are many spelling and grammar errors. As far as the election, shouldn't we be voting for President?
Posted by: T. | October 3, 2008 9:20 AM
Well the debate wasn't as the trainwreck I had expected with Sarah remebering her lines like a good actress should. That's the key. She had to act to pretrend to understand matters of foreign affairs that she just learned this week. Biden didn't need to act or pretend. I thought he was too soft on her. I like the Biden I've seen grit his teeth and growl on the Senate floor, but not everone else does, so in the respect, he did well.
This debate only matters because if you are concerned that Obama could be, God forbid, assassinated or that McCain could die of, God forbid, cancer or old age, the VP has to be ready at a moments notice to assume the position of President. Biden can and Sarah simply can't.
Besides, I'll not tolerate another person in the Executive Branch who can't even pronounce the word Nuclear. She said Nucular like George Bush has for eight years, makes my stomach churn. You could tell she's pro Bush. Using poor grammar, pinning this war down to simplistice win or lose terms. It's far more complicated than that.

It did.
Palin managed to recite enough recycled catch phrases to redeem herself. Good for her - at least it demonstrated her memory and role playing skills.
Biden didn't put his foot in his mouth, and unsurprisingly demonstrated a depth of knowledge and experience that dwarfed Plain. But did he win the 'feel good' prize? No.

Who are you to judge? She doesn't know what it is like to be in the middle class besides Biden is a typical RICH politician pretending to actually care about Democratic supporters and mind set that is just absurd, lets let the people that haven't earned anything or paid into anything enough to make a pimple on any hard working GOP, and give them everything. I for one don't believe that is true. Besides Biden is rich he doesn't have to worry about money and hasn't since he has been in the senate same with Obama. The ones that have been there the longest are the most corrupt. Oh and Obama was/is in the group "ACORN" wow they aren't racist huh? Nah, a primarily black organization supporting a black candidate man that isn’t racist? Nah lets over look that. Oh and I don't think someone like Obama should have any say in a war when he himself has never and will never be in that situation to know what it is like. And the lady that asked the questions last night is a known racist and Obama supporter,(who isn’t really important enough to remember her name) wow that wasn't planned much, Biden probably knew everything she was going to ask. He has been in the senate for 35 years I hope he knows something about what he is saying, but he doesn't he can just lie with a straight face and some idiots actually believe him. When she nailed him on several occasions last night, well to eyes that can actually see past the idiotic democratic views, he was gritting his teeth because he knew he was dead wrong and she nailed his old ass. He couldn't stop talking about BUSH! If you can't focus on your opponent that is right in front of you, how are you going to keep your eye on the ball as a VP, if all you can do is time travel and point fingers at Bush, last I checked he isn't in race right now. If you can't stay focused on the people you are competing against how are you going to do it the oval office? Dumbocrats "helping the little guy” who hasn't earned anything and gets welfare and wants to rise to the top without paying their dews". Nah not the right way to do things, it is easy to come behind an utter failure like Bush and say "Oh under my campaign this will not happen blah blah blah". Easy to say you are going to do something but to actually do it is another. All you have to do is the opposite. A rat can be trained to do a maze faster and without mistakes, so doing your campaign opposite of an utter failure should be success. So with all those true facts said, take a deep breath do the right thing at the little voting booth and press the McCain/Palin button. If you choose any other candidate.

I don't see what the big deal is about Sarah. It's already been determined that she a non-candidate for VP but does qualify to fire up the right wing evangelical crazies!
Given that's the case all Joe needs to do is stay focused on McCain and the rest of the BUSHIES that have proven they can bring the largest power in the world down in just 8 years.
Sarah is doing just fine blowing herself out of the saddle.
