New Security Checks at Tourist Spots
Chinese officials announced that they would strengthen security checks at popular tourist destinations in the wake of Saturday's attack on the in-laws of the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball coach.
Guards will use handheld metal detectors to suspicious check people and their baggage, said Wang Zhifa, a deputy director of the National Tourism Administration. He said the incident "alerted relevant departments to strengthen security efforts."
Todd Bachman was killed in the attack at the Drum Tower, noted as a must-see destination in many tour guides about Beijing. A Chinese man stabbed him and his wife Barbara in an attack that was apparently unprovoked. Barbara Bachman was seriously injured but is now in stable condition, Wang said. He added that Chinese officials have arranged for her relatives to come to Beijing and promised that all the best facilities and experts will be made available to treat her.
