Winning Renovations and the Weekend Poll
Yes there was remodeling going on in the Washington area during the housing bust. Three local remodelers and architects just won Contractor of the Year awards from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. The association won't give up pix of a house remodeled by Anthony Wilder Design/Build of Cabin John, which won for an exterior costing $100,000 or more. They want to splash them around an upcoming remodeling magazine instead of having them posted on the world-renowned, hand-picked and, as always, low-carb and fat-free Local Address blog. But here's a peek at other local winners:
This covered porch by the Wentworth design/build firm in Chevy Chase won the residential exterior costing under $100,000 category. Careful column placement and the use of railings made of tempered glass and aluminum were among the techniques they used to preserve garden views from inside the house while providing a sheltered outdoor space.
This new foyer and front porch combination added to an existing cottage allowed the owners to replace an old set of indoor stairs that was so steep they had to use their hands on the ascent, climbing them like a ladder. S.D. Lohr remodelers in Waldorf did the job.
