What If There Weren't All Those Foreclosures?
Distressed home-sales--foreclosures and short sales--magnified the price decline in California since 2006 by about 5.4 percentage points, according to a research paper from the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which regulates Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The study attempts to quantify the effect of distressed home sales on home price measures such as FHFA's House Price Index.

Virginia's Tax Holiday for Emergency Supplies
Got duct tape? Virginia is waiving its 5 percent sales tax on almost anything that households ought to keep in stock in case of a blackout or emergency. The tax holiday runs all this week, through May 31. District and Maryland residents may find it worth crossing the Potomac to take advantage of the break.

A Flag Primer for Memorial Day
