Energy Star: A cheap and easy seal of approval
You won't believe what garnered the government's Energy Star seal of approval in a sting set up by the Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan federal auditor: A gasoline-powered alarm clock. That's right, a completely bogus gasoline-powered alarm clock. I'll tell you I have never found these kind of yuks in a GAO document.

Is this the worst of it for remodelers?
The current quarter may be the worst point of the economic downturn for home remodelers, according to a report out Thursday from Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies. Spending on remodeling is likely to start increasing after this quarter ends in March, and continue rising through the rest of the year.

Our homes are late to the tech revolution
Technology-based change keeps coming at us at the speed of the closest WiFi router, but not that much has changed around our homes. Well, technology has changed life in the family room. We have hi-def television with streaming movies. Interactive video games like the Wii. And Skype gives me free face-to-face communication around the world through my laptop. Yes, the tech revolution has made its way to my couch....and pretty much stopped there.

Feds link Chinese drywall to 'corrosive environment' in homes
The Consumer Product Safety Commission's unsettling advice to people who live in homes made with Chinese drywall: "Spend as much time outdoors in fresh air as possible." On Monday, the CPSC reported there is a "strong association" between homes built with Chinese drywall and levels of hydrogen sulfide in the air and corroding metals around the home.
