By Terri Rupar

Two people were seriously injured Friday night when the vehicle they were in crashed into a tree in the 5000 block of East Capitol Street SE, authorities said.

The two, a man and a woman, who both appeared to be in their 40s, had to be extricated by rescue workers from the SUV after the 8:45 p.m. crash, according to the D.C. fire and emergency medical services department. Both were taken to hospitals.

No cause for the crash was known immediately.
