3 midshipmen expelled for spice use

By Daniel de Vise

Three midshipmen were separated from the U.S. Naval Academy for possession or use of synthetic marijuana Tuesday, bringing to 11 the number of mids expelled from the service academy in the ongoing investigation of a “spice” ring, academy officials said Thursday.

Each of the three was disciplined based on allegations brought to the attention of academy leaders by other midshipmen, the officials said.

Since its introduction at the academy last year, synthetic marijuana has become popular among rank-and-file midshipmen and on the football and wrestling teams, said former midshipmen. Some isolated corners of the historic Annapolis campus, they said, have become well-known gathering spots for smoking it.

I had no idea they had a Naval Academy on Arrakis but the spice must flow.

Why is this drug referred to as "synthetic marijuana"? Its active ingredient is not THC or any other cannabinoid. To the naked eye it superficially resembles marijuana, but does not share any properties with cannabis. If you called it "synthetic heroin," "synthetic magic mushrooms," or "synthetic crack," you'd be just as accurate.

Burn the Witches!

When will this insane anti-drug hysteria ever end?

What a huge waste of money and ruined lives caused by this stupid war against drugs (people).

@MARILYN MANSON SAYS: "What a huge waste of money and ruined lives caused by this stupid war agains drugs (people)."

Hope Manson remembers this the next time she walks past a homeless shelter or is burglarized by some person selling her stuff for drugs...Hysteria eh???

The use of illegal drugs should never be tolerated or accepted.

it's none of your business what anyone puts into their body, illegal or not, so your tolerance and acceptance is wholly irrelevant. it's not the government's business, either.

and yes, all homeless people are drug addicts. great stereotyping, there. thank goodness this article wasn't on a hate crime. THAT could have been awkward.

Spoken out of true ignorance. The military academies aren't your typical liberal arts university that produce artists or writers. They produce military officers who many will go on to become influence commanders or leaders in their respective branches. Would you want a Captain of a nuclear submarine or warship who has a culture of drug use and/or is high on the job? Would you want an Army field Captain or Major high on Marijuana leading his soldiers into battle?

This would be a non-issue if it was at GW or American university. So before you blather something ignorantly, please think first.

These young men knew that what they were doing would have harsh consequences if they got caught...now they get to deal with those consequences. They should have to pay back the government for the money wasted on their education while in the academy. Sad state of affairs but they brought it on themselves...

@pentagon40,

You said "Hope Manson remembers this the next time she walks past a homeless shelter..."

What does a homeless shelter have to do with anything?

We should close all of the military academies and train our offices through ROTC.
