Arrest in intern slaying

By Washington Post editors

A 28-year-old Southeast Washington man was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged in the fatal shooting of the 18-year-old city council intern who was found dead Sunday, D.C. police said.

Police said Omare Ishmael Cotton, 28, was charged with first degree murder in the death of Alonte Sutton.

Sutton was killed May 8 in the 200 block of Newcomb Street SE. His body was found in a steeply pitched wooded area in that block the next day.

Police have said they are investigating why officers called to the 200 block on Saturday for a report of a shooting did not find Sutton then.
