Ex Md. teacher convicted of sex offense

By Washington Post editors

A former kindergarten teacher has been convicted in Frederick of a third-degree sex offense with a 5-year-old boy.

Thirty-two-year-old Matthew Berresford of East Berlin, Pa., was convicted Tuesday as part of Alford plea agreement. In an Alford plea, the defendant doesn't admit guilt but acknowledges the state has enough evidence for a conviction.

The deal includes a suspended prison term and five years of supervised probation. Sentencing is set for July 22.

Prosecutors say they offered the deal with the parents' consent, partly to avoid having their son testify at trial.
