Fire at high-rise forces evacuation
A storage room fire Wednesday in an Alexandria forced authorities to evacuate a high-rise apartment building, Alexandria Fire department officials said.
No injuries were reported in relation to the fire, at a 16-story building in the 5300 block of Holmes Run Parkway about 4 p.m. One woman was evaulated at the scene for a medical emergency unrelated to the fire, said Battalion Chief Dwayne Bonnette.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire in the basement storage room, but smoke poured throughout the building. Evacuated residents were sheltered on DASH buses for about two hours, until the building was cleared of smoke.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
