Howard teacher sentenced for sex abuse
A former Howard County teacher's aide who wrote dozens of love letters to an 8-year-old third grade girl at his school was sentenced to seven years in state prison Friday for sexual abuse, The Baltimore Sun reports.
The conviction and sentencing of Karl Marshall Walker Jr., 39, was precedent setting in that Walker was convicted of sexual abuse even though he never had physical contact with the girl.
Walker Jr. will remain free on bail pending an appeal of his conviction to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.
Walker, who was married with two children, worked at Bryant Woods Elementary School in Columbia for three years. He was banned from the school last March after one of the letters was found by a student teacher as furniture was being moved.
