Male robbed on U-Md campus

By Erica Johnston

A robbery occurred early Sunday on the Unviersity of Maryland campus, authorities said.

The victim was thrown to the ground, and his wallet and cell phone were taken.

The incident occurred near a dormitory just west of the campus library about 4:30 a.m. as the male victim was walking on a sidewalk, the campus police said.

The police said three robbers approached, and ordered the victim to surrender his belongings. One threw him to the ground, and he gave them the wallet and phone, the campus police said.

The robbers fled toward a large campus parking lot. .

It was not clear whether the victim was a student or whether he was injured.

Several robberies have been reported in the past two months in the area of the campus, but none of them occurred on the main campus.

The campus police need to bike and foot patrol the campus! Especially at night! Get the cops out of their cars and make them do their job!

It's poor blacks from the surrounding areas of College Park doing this. Always attacking whites. No wonder whites are fleeing PG county.

rollmonte I wanted to say something out of anger but then it hit me. You really don't know any better. So I pray for your kind because you truly are a sad case.

As someone who's taking night classes there, this is not what I want to be reading. Where is campus safety? Not on campus apparently.

I am writing a letter to the CP Police Dept. later today, but in the meantime...why was a student walking alone at 4:30am??? (Don't answer that.) We CP students get emails about robberies nearly every day, we know the campus isn't safe. Therefore, DON'T WALK ALONE!!

Granted, this same thing has happened recently in large (4+) groups. Students, get mace. Get a nightstick (club). Get a taser that also has an ear-piercing alarm. BE PRO-ACTIVE!

It is a puzzle to me why the campus and nearby areas are not better patrolled by police. Sher the younger students at U MD are 'easy pickins' for the ghetto thugs, but the thugs effect all of the residents of CP, Greenbelt and other nearby areas.

I am shocked and appalled that someone advocated self defense. A victim should never defend themself. After all, that would not be fair, and you might make the poor, oppressed, perpetrator mad.

The police cannot be everywhere. These predators who come in from off campus would simply go to another part of the campus and rob someone else. Blacks have been coming on to campus for years to rob people. I remember once when someone proposed putting up a fence around campus with guard posts and the liberals called it racist and the idea was forgotten.

Nothing anybody can do about it because if you tell the truth you are a racist apparently. Let the robberies continue.

Any university in the midst of an urban neighborhood face local riff raffs. Howard University in DC also faces this same problem with robberies and assaults perpetrated by the natives of that locality.

I think a fence would be a great idea. More aggressive policing, stopping and asking for student ID to those who are on campus and don't look like students. Make the environment very unwelcoming. Oh, and please spare me the whole profiling arguments, the locals do not look like college students. They are thugged out.

Rollmonte..how ignorant of you..were you there and saw the robbers up close? I don't think so. Why was he walking alone at 4:30am anyway, makes no sense. They stress it a thousand times to be proactive/walk in groups. The police can't be everywhere all the time. Somebody should rob you and instill some "sense" in your retarded brain, moron!

What reporting! The complete description of the robbers given in the article: "three robbers".

I guess the writer thinks a description is unnecessary. That in iteslf is pretty darn sad.

Why carry a gun?

Because cops are too heavy.

Not smart walking alone @ 4:30 am when you know there have been strong arm robberies in that area.
But, he shouldn't have to worry about being robbed either.
As for those of you crushing Rollmonte, I notice nobody is stating he's inaccurate either.
In all probability he's right. Its sad and unfortunate but he's likely to be correct.
Now rather than blast him, how about going after the guys committing the crime?
Don't you think you're giving the actual criminals a free pass by not even addressing their crime?

Out of all the decent places to build University of Maryland, the state chose Thug Park in Prince Thug County just because it was free land.

Good shootin', Tex. UMD was established in 1856, when the ratio of people:livestock in the area was a lot higher than it is today.

Nice try, though.

I was there and I saw them: three WASPy looking chaps, with Sperry Topsiders, Polo shirts with collars up, J. Crew critter pants, and knit sweaters tied arount their necks. Two were carrying tennis rackets; one had his golf clubs.

They mumbled something about meeting up later at their yacht club to divide the loot...
