Retired officer shot in NE carjacking

By Washington Post Editors

Update, 1:07 a.m.: A retired D.C. police officer was shot and wounded Saturday during a carjacking at a service station in Northeast Washington, the police said.

The officer, who had been a lieutenant, was washing his car at a Citgo station in the 1300 block of Kenilworth Avenue NE when the incident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon Saturday, police said.

Eric Frost, a police spokesman said three men in a stolen BMW took the victim’s car at gunpoint. Police said the victim was shot at least twice in the arm, and exchanged fire with the robbers.

The robbers fled in both vehicles toward Interstate 295 and the BMW was later found abandoned in the District.

I did not know that Kenilworth was spelled with 2 n's...please use spell check or hire an efficient proofreader. I see too many misspelled words on this website.

The issue is bigger than a misspelled street name. The issue is that three men shot a man and stole his car. They were already traveling in one stolen car when they shot the driver of the second car they stole. The community should be outraged about this. News about incidents like this amount to much more than how well the stories are written.

Hey FlatBooks,
Where do you live that no crimes occur? By the way, in DC we require a verb in a grammatically correct sentence.

Meanwhile, Americans keep buying Lexus and BMW luxury cars while thousands of the mentally ill homeless rot their lives away on our streets, and millions of children in the developing world die for lack of dollar-a-dose vaccines.

We are ourselves committing huge crimes against humanity. This tragic little carjacking vignette, presented to us by an infotainment company for the sole purpose of earning advertising dollars, is but a tiny drop in the bucket compared to what we all are doing through our own acts of omission or commission.

Do Metro Police officers spend any time at all on the practice range? This retired lieutenant opens fire on three punks and they drive away unharmed while he is hit three times?

What is wrong with this picture?

I guess that the reason that Chief Lanier and the DC Council don't want to allow civilians to carry concealed is that they assume that the average civilian is as incompetent at marksmanship as the bozos in the MPD. It is a sad state of affairs when three gangbangers can out-shoot a retired police lieutenant.

Did I miss something? I didn't see where it said the officer returned fire. It would have been great if he had.

Those three poor boys were just trying to help the economy by trading in their Beemer for a Lexus.

Sorry, pal, but the TV reports say that the shooting started when the retired officer, who was outside of his car, drew his weapon and exchanged fire with the carjackers who were driving off with his Lexus. The gangbangers hit him three times and he missed.

Piss-poor marksmanship for a retired lieutenant.

the reply to: hisroc; How do you know so much about MPD Officers shooting skills? And let me ask you this. You think that if you are ambushed by 3 goons, you're going to have a good chance at pulling your weapon and getting them? You have to look at all the circumstances. Now, I am not sure if the retired LT was ambushed and shot first, and then he retaliated. Or if he began to pull his weapon out and then the goons started to shoot at him. But bottom line is, you can't judge and say how you would have handled this situation. Cops are human and are not perfect. Anybody can become proficient at shooting a gun. Some people shoot better than others. You can't say these goons out shot him. It was a timing thing. He was ambushed, 3 against 1. And stop crying about the whole concealed weapons thing in DC. Too many whack jobs live in and visit DC to allow them to carry. Too many VIP's visit and live in DC. It is too high risk. Now, I am all for having a gun in the house.

I hope that retired officer makes out okay. If you think DC is bad, try living in downtown Baltimore. A couple of days ago we had TEN shootings in one day, TEN! These are all young black guys killing each other. None of this is good for anyone. The people in those neighborhoods are trapped. They can't let their little kids play outside for fear that a bunch of drug dealers will start shooting and kill one of their kids. These killers have no conscience, no families, and no brains. They gravitate to any group that will act like their family. They laugh at the people who hold marches and speak-outs because they know that isn't going to stop them. This will never end until they kill each other off. We have plenty of people in Baltimore who are wonderful, but they suffer under the daily duress of living near these gun toting thugs. As long as the NRA holds our government in it's grip, law enforcement will never get the guns away from the killers. Our government doesn't have the guts to tell the NRA to go to h*ll.

Chazo,

The retired police lieutenant wasn't "ambushed." He was presented with a tactical situation in which he could have allowed the three punks to withdraw and take his car. Instead, he chose to initiate a gun fight--and he lost badly. He was lucky he wasn't killed.

Don't draw a gun unless you know how to use it; retired cop or not.

papa, it is not the NRA who protects the killers. Guns are illegal in DC, period. The gangbangers don't seem to be dissuaded by the DC gun laws and I doubt if any of them are members of the NRA.

" The issue is that three men shot a man and stole his car."

That should be the issue, BUT, the guy was a RETIRED cop. Have DC's gun laws already been repealed? If not, the retired cop will probably end up in more trouble than the 3 punks since he shouldn't have been carrying.

Posted by: BEEPEE | June 6, 2010 3:00 AM | Report abuse

BEEPEE,

Retired cops in DC are allowed to carry concealed. For some reason, the District believes that they are at least as competent as the active sworn officers with a handgun. This case, along with many others in similar circumstances, proves that neither the active officers nor the retired officers are competent to carry.

When can anyone cite a case when a MPD officer dropped a criminal with a single shot? In most cases, the MPD officer fired 7-9 times and might have hit the criminal once, if at all.

@ hisroc: I see that you like the attention so I will give you a little more. First off police or not, retired or not, he was a human being that almost lost his life plain and simple. This man has a family watch what you say because Karma is full circle. Secondly I am sure you get plenty of practice shooting while you are playing duck hunt on your nintendo but since you know so much, than you should know "high stress" situations affect your breathing and steadiness which affects your aim. The best marksmen in the world sometimes could not bust a grape in a fruit fight because of the mitgating facors that go into being an excellent shot under duress. Alot of times it is just chance and the grace of Godvthat the Officers win the gun fights. Some of you really need to stop being computer gangsters and show some compassion, please keep this man in our prayers. Last thing, being a police officer is a job just like anything else, remember that when you want to play "God" and prejudge people.

It's amazing that most here have lost sight of what this really means and that is that the streets are controlled by thugs who have no thought of your safety and don't care if they kill you just to take what you have. We all live in a society that we have of our own making. Sadly these thugs get away with this stuff all day long and it don't matter where you live. It's not the guns that kill it's the people who use the gun's that kill. If everyone had guns and the thugs knew this it would put a stop to much of this trouble we have every day. Thugs don't care about gun laws and to even think that they do is so funny. Taking guns away for our citizens don't not stop a thug they will buy a gun and use it anyway because they don't care about anything but themselves. Once you realize this you understand gun laws don't stop crime it only stops the honest people from having guns. The funny part is I don't have a gun in my house but I don't support taking guns away from an honest citizen either. Have I used guns oh yes I have in the most horrible way possible for the US. Army as a soldier. Where I'm put in a kill or be killed situation for our government. Pulling a gun and using it is something that few really understand. Killing someone even if you don't have a choice is something any good citizen will live with for the rest of their life. A thug don't give a crap about that and does not even think about that at all... they laugh at the thought of killing someone. Time to come to the realization that we all have created this mess and time for all of us to work to get this fixed. Grow up and see what is really in front of you not what you'd like to see.

The streets of DC are very dangerous. It is really sad that armed thugs have taken over the street. To not be afraid to commit such a brazen crime in broad daylight on a busy street shows how little respect these people have for rules, the DC police and human life. This show's that criminals aren't even afraid of being caught. DC represents an unarmed populous where the police are too weak or lazy to do anything and the laws don't allow citizens to fight back.

To hisroc: Ok, I'll tell you that I work in that district as a PO and can tell you through fact that he was ambushed. He used his weapon after he was shot. Enough said, tough guy. Come on a ride-a-long some day in my district or in 7D so you can see for yourself, and you can get some insight on what we go through on a daily basis. As for citing when was the last time an MPD Officer dropped someone, lets focus on last year at the Shell station in the 3400 block of Benning Rd. That Officer dropped the guy from over 25 meters with 7 of 8 shots with a Glock 17 9MM, in the dark. How's that for citing tough guy?

To Jimof1913: That block of Kenilworth Ave does not have any homes. It's nothing more than a couple of service stations, Mechanic Shops, Tow Companies, and small warehouses. And it is a busy thoroughfare because it connects to DC 295 North between Polk Street NE and Eastern Ave NE. A lot of crime happens here because of all the escape routes criminals can take. They can run to the Minnesota Ave Metro Station, across the foot bridge to the other side of DC 295 to the Kenilworth Gardens Housing Projects near Quarles Street, or if they are in a vehicle, hop on DC 295, or towards Eastern Avenue into PG county.

Mayor Fenty has no choice but to support this farce of juvenile rehabilitation. He knows that DYRS is a joke and the kids know that they will released to continue their reign of terror in 24-72 hours of their commitment. Parents need to be jailed for their out of control kids. Why aren't we asking the parents what their children are doing outside after 9pm with guns and robbing people. It's should be too much to hold these parents in contempt and forced into drug treatment, or a GED/job training progam, so they can GET A JOB and pay restitution.

Every parent of a wayward youth says that their child was with the wrong crowd!! WTH!! If that is the case, what haven't you taught your kids!!! Obviously, they are looking for something that you didn't teach. Respect, sense of belonging, pride, which seems like the things that are sought in gang membership. Parents stop making excuses and do your job! Parent your kids.

Chazo,

Why would I want to do a ride-along with you? I already know what a cesspool the 7D is, thanks to you and your fellow cops. Why don't you do your job and clean it up? And spare me all the police union talking points about the failures of the criminal justice system, the way that higher-ups tie the hands of patrol officers, the failure of schools and parents, ad nauseum. The fact of the matter is that the MPD reflects the dysfunction of the DC government as a whole.

BTW, that Shell station shooting was one I had in mind when I made that last comment. New flash, Dick Tracy: shooting someone at 25 meters 8 times and hitting them 7 times is hardly outstanding marksmanship, esp. since the criminal wasn't killed. The perp was barely wounded as I recall and survived. Oh, and it was at night but it wasn't dark under those neon gas station lights. Nice try, though.

To hisroc: Ok sir, I never badmouthed you one bit. First off, I'm in the mighty 6D where we had the largest crime reduction the city has ever experienced in ages. 2nd off, "Dick Tracy", the perp did not survive you retard!!! He was DRT on scene. DRT meaning Dead Right There. 3rd thing is 25 meters with any pistol and hitting your target with 7 of 8 shots in the dark is great markmanship. I am done arguing with you citizen. Apparently you don't know nothing about law enforcement.

Posted by: Chazo | June 6, 2010 5:04 PM | Report abuse

To hisroc: HERE ARE FACTS: He was shot six times. The car was running (the keys and the radio were on) while he was enjoying the weather and cleaning his car. One young man jumped in his car when he was cleaning it at the gas station. He started to run for his car but then heard gun shots so he opened fire on his own car. He unloaded all of his bullets. He did not know that he been shot by the two other men in the BMW. He thought that the suspect in his car was running from a crime scene. He did not realize that he had been shot six times until he saw the blood on the ground from his artery.

I dont care how well u shoot, you still need to get the gun in your hand. The amount of time your using to try and get your gun out you will be shot. Thank GOD-- Blue didnt die. Hopefully he will be able to move on and enjoy his retirement. Negative writers you stink.
