Md. man gets 10 years in online deception

By Mike McPhate

A Montgomery County man who assumed the online identity of a 16-year-old girl and lured another girl into sharing explicit photos of herself was sentenced to 10 years in prison Tuesday.

Michael Speelman, 52, of Adelphi, assumed the name Lisa Stauffer to trick a Pennsylvania girl, 15, into a romantic relationship in 2004, according to Speelman’s plea agreement. The girl later sent Speelman nude photos of herself; he reciprocated with pictures purporting to be Lisa.

Two year later, the deceit took an even darker turn when Speelman feigned the suicide death of Lisa. He then adopted the identity of Lisa’s mother, Sarah Stauffer, and began threatening to send explicit pictures of the girl to her family.

At one point, the girl said she had a boyfriend and wanted to end the correspondence, a plea that prompted more threats, prosecutors said.

In 2008, Speelman finally confessed the deceit to the girl in an online chat. He then turned on his Web cam and exposed himself, prosecutors said.

In a search of Speelman’s home, authorities said they found a photo album with printed nude photos of the victim, videos depicting child pornography and explicit pictures of another girl between ages 12 and 15.

Speelman will have to register as a sex offender when he is released.

Sooner or later the list of "preverts" will be more than half the population.

Then what do we do?

So if you are online you can't pretend to be anyone other than yourself? The MOCO police are going to be very busy.

Too bad the courts can't lay some time on somebody who really deserves it -

The guy might be a little freak, and definitely needs some time on the shrinks couch, but 10 years? The fascists in power just love locking up the population.

Bizarre on many levels. There are apparently many laws related to illegal activities on the Internet. How does one find out what these laws are, and how do the laws apply when the illegal activities "cross" state lines? If someone in this blog misrepresents himself/herself, is it illegal?

What a clown. Obviously, this guy has more issues than the article could cover.
What 50 something guy tries to hook up with a 15 year old? Really?
Then to try to blackmail her with pictures is just too creepy.
He is going to get so dominated on his cellblock that he'll understand what its like being victimized. Going to regret this big time...

The post wouldn't report the "time suspended" on such cases. Teach your children, let them know the world is full of theses types.

Clearly he had nothing better to do with his time. Perv.

That piece of excrement manipulated a CHILD.

Which part of that are you you having a problem understanding?

I don't know why any one feels sympathy for his criminal. These are the most dangerous types of criminals. A pedophile cannot control their impulses. Most should be locked up when found. End of story.

A pedophile cannot control his impulses, but the state correctional officers are supposed to do it for him. America has failed to handle this pedophilia crisis with the right actions.

No doubt this guy is a creep but what is wrong with this girl who believes everything someone says on the internet and never met the guy??? He pretends to be the mother of a dead girl she has been chatting with...still no one has ever met anyone else...

Articles confiscated from this guy might qualify him for the sex offender list and some jail time for sure but this girl needs help immediately or she will be duped over and over in life...

This guy will never be rehabilitated, might as well put him in general population or execute him.
