Mom charged after daughter, 6, drowns

By Erica Johnston

A Dale City woman has been charged with felony child neglect in the death of her 6-year-old daughter after the girl was found unresponsive in a bathtub at her home, Prince William County police said Wednesday.

The mother, Andrea Monique Beale, 31, called emergency crews to her home shortly before 11:30 a.m. Friday, saying she had briefly left her daughter Kaylan unattended, said police spokeswoman Officer Erika Hernandez. Kaylan died Monday at a hospital, and Beale was arrested the next day, police said.

Four other of Beale’s children have been removed from the house and are in the care of a grandparent, Hernandez said.

Beale, of the 5000 block of Linfield Street, faces felony child endangerment charges in connection with the children: a girl, 3, and three boys ages 8, 10 and 20 months.

Beale is free on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

I'm actually really surprised that a six-year-old would drown in the bathtub. How often does that happen?

Something really fishy here -- unless the child was totally physically handicapped and couldn't sit up in the tub. If that's the case, then the mother shouldn't have left her unattended. Sounds like another case for social services to investigate and get those other kids away from her.

I recall not long ago a man who was negligent with his 6 kids He left one in the car and that child died. The Dad thought one of the other kids had him. The father got a slap on the wrist. Lots of comments like "He has suffered enough already". But mother's are held to a much higher standard it seems. Folks are immediately suspecting her of foul play.

i don't have kids, but correct me if i'm wrong. how does a 6 year old drown in a bathtub?

... three boys, 8, 10, and 20 months ... 8 and 10 months? And they're both hers?

I do have kids and you're not wrong. A 6 year old does not "just" drown in a bathtub unless they're handicapped/disabled in some way.

There's more to this story.

blackforestcherry - I believe author meant 8 years, 10 years and a 20 month old.

I also am curious as to how a 6 year old could drown in a utb?

The boys sound like they were 8 yrs old, 10 yrs old, and 20 months.

What a sad story.

Definitely some foul play is involved or the six yr old was incapacitated in some way. A 6 year old drowning in a bathtub in incomprehensible.

Child services may have to come and investigate me 'cause my almost 4 yr old takes a bath and requests her "privacy" in doing so.

So many WaPo articles leave unanswered, obvious questions. The reporting and editing aren't what they used to be -- and this is supposed to be one of the premier papers in the nation.

You can't really supervise a six-year old in the tub because they usually want their privacy.

I wouldn't blame the Post -- my assumption is that the police haven't released any more information that would explain things better. I checked two other sites with the story and none of them had more information, although on WUSA there are commenters who claim to know the family and are defending the mother, and none say anything about a disability. Speculation seems to be that one of the older kids held the girl's head underwater or was otherwise responsible.

Oh, and this story indicates that the charges are based on the general situation that response crews found in the home, and not simply the girl's death:

There's more going on here than that poor six year old (?) drowning in a bathtub.

my daughter was in the same kindergarten class as this young girl who has "drown" in the bathtub. i am heartbroken by this and so is my daughter who was very close to her. But one must ask why this young girl was not in school on Friday at 11:30am when she was found.
