Pedestrian killed in Fairfax County

By Washington Post editors

Fairfax County Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash in the Mount Vernon area.

Police say a Hispanic man in his 50s was crossing Richmond Highway Saturday night when he was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 58-year-old Maryland man.

The victim was not in a crosswalk, police say, adding that speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

The victim's identity is being withheld, pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS/8477.

Seems like the truth, the majority of them never cross at crosswalks or intersections, the legal place to do so. Guess they think they're still running across the border.

If you hit a pedestrian in any circumstance it is your fault. They have the right of way everywhere.

If that were true, why do we have "DO NOT WALK" signs? Get your facts straight. They have the right of way when they're in a crosswalk. I see it often - they'll dart out across six lanes of 50mph road while talking on their cell phones.

Personally, I feel sorry for the guy that hit him. He's going to have to deal with getting his vehicle repaired, nightmares, etc. Perhaps he should sue the victim's family.

It seems to me that anyone can cross a street illegally and/or unsafely. Please stop the racial slurs and discrimination. It does not help. Some prayers for the victim would be nice. Thank you.
