3 shot after Pr. Geo.'s cruiser is rammed

By Erica Johnston

A Prince George’s County police officer shot three male suspects after a vehicle pursuit that ended in front of the county’s district courthouse late Wednesday night, police said.

As of 2 a.m. Thursday, one man was in critical condition, said Capt. Misty Mints, a police spokeswoman. The other two sustained injuries not believed to be life threatening, she said. The suspects were being treated at local hospitals.

No officers were injured, Mints said.

The incident began just before 11 p.m., when an officer was driving around Campus Way South, an area where several armed robberies have been committed recently, Mints said. The officer saw several people standing around a burgundy-colored van in the parking lot in front of a business, apparently engaging in "suspicious" activities, Mints said. The van was later found to be stolen.

Once the people saw the officer, some members of the group fled, Mints said. Three men jumped into the van and began driving along Route 202. The police officer followed.

Minutes later, the van drove into the parking lot of the district courthouse, Mints said. Its driver then began to double back around, apparently realizing that he’d run into a dead end.

Facing the oncoming van was a different police cruiser occupied by two police officers, Mints said. Expecting that the van’s occupants were going to bail out of the vehicle and run, the officers exited their vehicle.

The van then accelerated, ran over a parking sign and struck the front of the cruiser on the driver’s side, Mints said. About the same time, the officer who had been driving dove back into the car and crouched inside.

The second officer, unable to see his partner, assumed that the van had struck him and was dragging him across the ground, Mints said. He began firing through the van’s window, striking the three men.

It was not immediately clear how many shots the officer fired, Mints said. The investigation into the incident continues.

Ha ha!...Misty Mints.

My initial reaction was "good".

Then I read how stupid these morons were, and now I think the police shouldn't shoot anyone with an IQ below 70.

"Halt! Which direction does the sun rise?"

Yay! Too bad all the shots weren't fatal. Now taxpayers have to pay for their hospital and jail costs.

Good morning read. One bad guy is in critical condition. Two others caught. I wish it were three bad guys though. That would have made my week.

It's interesting that they headed toward the Courthouse when spotted on Campus Way South. The Courthouse is quite a few clicks from Campus Way.

Hat's off to the Prince George's County Police for doing a fine job. However, we must get those cops on the shooting range as they are trained to shoot to kill.

PG County Police do a lot of good work.
It just doesn't make the news like any other police force. Only the bad incidents get highlighted. They worked with my community with regard to the robberies. We had 3-4 last year with over 100 units. About 10-15 people showed up.

So be careful complaining about anyone when you are not willing to help yourselves.

No more robberies because PG Police got people to USE THEIR HOME SECURITY SYSTEMS!!

But that won't make news and neither did the program they put in place to monitor our neighborhood along with the information to help avoid being a target.

If the story is as presented (which it rarely is), then kudos to the police. These stupid pricks in the van took it on all responsibility for their actions when they broke the law. Being stupid and criminal together comes at a price. They are lucky they aren't dead, although that would have been an acceptable end to the incident too.

Stop thinking real life is like Hollywood where the good guys ALWAYS fatally wound the bad guys when they are shooting at them inside a moving vehicle...
Range time and realistic shooting scenarios help, but they will never make you shoot like a Hollywood cop...
Take my word for it. It is very difficult to hit a moving target in a high stress situation, let alone a person INSIDE the moving target at a distance. Furthermore, in real life, not all wounds resulting from a round are fatal...most aren't.

You should be thankful that there are people out there willing to take a bullet for you, to be investigated and messed with to no end for shooting at a criminal who wanted to kill them in the first place, all that for 50-70K a year...

GREAT JOB GUYS AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

Good job officers!!! Too bad you didn't kill any of them and save taxpayers medical bills, cost of trials, and prison costs....

It amazes me how you read a small article w/ very little info, and immediately the ones shot were guilty. WOW! It's good no one died, and hopefully the one in critical cond. does not die. Now let's see if first, there's a follow-up article and if so, will the details change....

So the cop fired into the Van because he "assumed that the van had struck his partner and was dragging him across the ground"? That sounds like baloney to me.

So, if the Cops lose visibility of one of their own they are allowed to use lethal force?

Just Sayin. The article doesn't even indicate if the guys were armed. I dislike criminals as much as the next guy, but I don't advocate gunning them down in the name of upholding the law.

And, how does the public verify the officer's description of what happened? What if he just decided to fire into the van because he was tired of chasing these guys around?

And if he knows that doing so is a violation of policy governing use of force, he'll probably be disiplined, and these guys are presumed criminals, since the van is stolen and they tried to evade the police, so why not just make up a story that can be neither proven or disproven, under the assumption that the it will be his word against the criminals?

I'm not saying what is reported didn't happen. But their is no mention of these guys being armed and if you, as a matter of policy, don't use guns except when you fear bodily injury, it seems awfully convenient that all of the sudden your partner disappears from your view and that that alone justifies using a deadly weapon.

shoot to kill should be the LAW...as soon as the officers saw the standing by the van he should have just shot them and not even called it in.

PG County, and forr that matter all of MD has become a bloody, nasty hole.
Thank God I moved to Virginia. I would encourage anyone who can to do the same. Here in VA, I can actually carry a handgun concealed or exposed to protect myself from the "little bit" of crime we have (compared to Maryland's).

It's nice to be treated like an adult.

Is there something (besides ignorance) that prevents Post writers from using place names when writing about PG County?! Where did this happen? Was it Hyattsville?

Ditto confederate1111.

I moved to Virginia from PG three years ago and can't believe the difference.

In six years in PG I found for myself that the police can and will do good work. The problem is that the population is too wild and causes so much trouble the police can't handle it all. And even worse, the residents just put up with all the crime, some of which they see.

When I moved there in 2001 I wanted to think that the black community wants to be a decent, contributing part of society. I don't believe that anymore.

There is no reason 2 re-read. The suggestion was, that there's more 2 the story...

If YOU had a brain, you would not have posted that comment; meaning we have no need to inquire about your level of "hometraining". Just to mark u as an a** hole!

@Towards_Light Yeah, they love this type of forum. you know, hiding behind their keyboards. Writing things they would never say to ppl faces.

They're called: eCowards!

@onesugar: harsh comments if you are one of the peaceful ppl in our communities.

I'm with realitychecker, why can't they say LARGO - why is it PG County... There are dozens of towns and cities in PGC, yet whenever something happens they dont say Cap Heights, Suitland, etc. Its like saying there was a shooting in DC, without specifying NE SE SW NW and/or a neighborhood. As if the whole county is exactly the same... but who ever accused the WaPo of being a good newspaper?
