By Clarence Williams

A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in in a high-security dorm at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Southeast Washington, sending one woman to a hospital for evaluation.

D.C. firefighters were called to the psychiatric hospital and found a fire on the first floor of a building on the campus in the 110 block of Alabama Avenue about 4 p.m., said Pete Piringer, a spokesman. One woman was taken to a hospital with non-life threatning injuries as a precaution, Piringer said.

A mattress caught fire and was largely doused by the builidng’s sprinkler system before it was quickly extinguished by firefighters, Piringer said. Patients and staff were evacuated to other parts of the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
