Traffic in the vicinity of Nationals Park was disrupted Monday evening after a suspicious package was discovered in the area, according to authorities.
The Nationals game against the Philadelphia Phillies was scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. and it appeared that the incident would delay the arrival of many fans.
The incident occurred near the Navy Yard station on the Metro Green Line, which is one of the main means of access to the stadium. One entrance of the station was reported closed.
The package was discovered about 6:15 p.m. near a bus stop on New Jersey Avenue SE, About an hour later, authorities were continuing to investigate, using x-ray equipment a D.C. police spokesman said.
Despite Monday night's dreary weather, a substantial number of fans may have headed to the game. Philadelphia is leading the National League's East Division with one of baseball's better records this year.
