Const. Ave. reopens near White House
updated 6:15 a.m.
U.S. Park Police have reopened several blocks of Constitution Avenue and 17th Street NW around the White House after bomb squad technicians examined a van parked in the area and determined that it posed no threat.
Park Police officers identified the van as "suspicious" sometime around 5 a.m., said Sgt. David Schlosser, a police spokesman. Constitution Avenue was closed between 15th and 18th streets NW; 17th Street was closed from Independence Avenue to C Street.
The streets were reopened shortly after 6 a..m.
"It is between the White House and the Washington Monument,"
Schlosser said, explaining why police treated the situation with extreme caution.
