More modest version of Va. seal unveiled

By Washington Post Editors

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is opting for a more modest depiction of the state's seal.

The seal depicts the Roman goddess Virtus wearing a blue tunic draped over one shoulder with her left breast exposed. But on the new lapel pins Cuccinelli recently handed out to his staff, her bosom is covered by an armored breastplate.

Workers in attendance when the new design came up at a staff meeting said Cuccinelli joked that it converts a risque image into a PG one.

But the joke might be on Cuccinelli, said University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato.
“When you ask to be ridiculed, it usually happens. And it will happen here, nationally,” he said. “This is classical art, for goodness' sake.” Cuccinelli has found himself at the center of political controversy numerous times since taking office in January. The conservative Republican was ridiculed on Comedy Central's “The Daily Show” in March after advising state colleges and universities they lack the legal authority to protect gay employees from discrimination.

Cuccinelli spokesman Brian Gottstein said the attorney general has pointed out the “more modest attire,” saying the rendition “harkens back to an older version of the seal.” The pins were paid for by Cuccinelli's political action committee, not with taxpayer funds, Gottstein said.
The Great Seal of the Commonwealth is a two-sided image that dates to 1776. But multiple varieties of the seal have been used over the years, said State Capitol historian Mark Greenough.
The side depicted on the state flag features Virtus standing victoriously over Tyranny, a male figure prone on the ground in defeat, his crown fallen from his head. Beneath him is the motto Sic Semper Tyrannis: Thus Always to Tyrants.

The modern version is based on language added to the state code in 1930. It specifies that Virtus is “dressed as an Amazon” while clutching a spear in one hand and a sword in the other.
The secretary of the commonwealth, Janet Polarek, is charged by law with being the keeper of the seal, but declined to offer an opinion on Cuccinelli's interpretation.

When Virtus was fighting Tyranny, Polarek said, “a dress code was probably not her first concern.”

Wow, we Virginians deserve what we voted for; an incompetent idiot. He serves a narrow sub-set of right wing constituency that in no way reflects Virginia. I cannot fathom that he sees this as a stepping stone to higher office. Are we that stupid to consider voting for this fool for governor in a few years?

More evidence: The lunatics are running the asylum. Better the bare breast on the seal than the bare butts of the current administration. What an embarrassment to the Commonwealth. Just look what you voted for.

if one really wanted to update and reform the Virginia seal one should really alter the state's motto, sic semper tyrannus, thus always to tyrants. John Wilkes Booth cried out this phrase after shooting President Lincoln in the head.

Then again, we could just leave it all alone and get on with the business of governing the state, but governing is the last things these ideologues want to do.

-----------------------------

what was the *real* problem with the original seal? were congressman trying to have sex with it and people were complaining?

i don't see how it could be so disturbing. i mean how the seal could be disturbing... i completely understand how the acts of congress could be disturbing.

This is reminiscent of Ashcroft covering of the "spirit of Justice" at DOJ in 2002. It ended up being an emblematic move that foreshadowed the contempt that the Bush political staff had with respect to faithful adherence to the law.

AG Kook's moves are in a similar vein. Reader4 is right on the money. Kook's preference seems to lie closer to Burqa-land than anything else. He's moving further and further away from the model endorsed by Thomas Jefferson, George Mason, and Richard Henry Lee almost 230 years ago.

From the state that has produced so many political giants, it was inevitable that it would produce at least one mental midget. There is a boob involved here, but it's not of the mammary variety. The boob involved is Cuccineli. Anyone who finds this part of the state seal offensive or, dare I say titillating, has serious problems. Psst, buddy! Wanna buy some porn? I have some Virginia state seals available... Someone needs to contact the circus. We've found the missing clown serving as Virginia's Attorney General.

Actually, the thing with the Amazons wasn't that they paraded around with breast exposed. The legend is that they cut of the right breast so it wouldn't interfere with shooting a bow.

So maybe Cuccinelli can modify the image once more, this time under the cover of mythological accuracy (or original intent, for you constitutional scholars) to show the right breast removed, thereby making Virginia the patron state of all mastectomy patients.

Can we now expect Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to accuse Virtus of being a witch. Wouldn't surprise me. The following took place in Virginia on July 10, 1706.

Sure sounds like something he would get a kick out of doing.

"Grace Sherwood, the Witch of Virginia

Whereas Grace Sherwood being suspected of witchcraft has a long time waited for a fit opportunity for a further examination, and by her consent and approbation of this court it is ordered that the sheriff take all such convenient assistance of boats and men as shall be by him thought fit, to meet at Jonathan Harper's plantation in order to take the said Grace forthwith and put her into the above man's depth and try her how she swims therein, always having care of her life to preserve her from drowning, and as soon as she comes out that he request as many ancient and knowing women as he possibly can to search her carefully for all teats, spots, and marks about her body not usual on others, and that as they find the same to make report on oath to the truth thereof to the court, and further it is ordered that some women be requested to shift and search her before she go into the water that she carry nothing about her to cause any further suspicion.

entry made later in the same day

Whereas on complain of Luke Hill in behalf of her Majesty that now is against Grace Sherwood for a person suspected of witchcraft, and having had sundry evidences sworn against her, proving many circumstances to which she could not make any excuse of little or nothing to say in her own behalf, only seemed to rely on what the court should do, and thereupon consented to be tried in the water and likewise to be searched again, which experiments being tried and she swimming when therein and bound, contrary to custom and the judgement of all spectators and afterwards being searched by five ancient women who have all declared on oath that she is not like them nor no other woman that they knew of, having two things like titts on her private parts of a black color, being blacker than the rest of her body, all which circumstance the court weigh's in their consideration do therefore order that the sheriff take the said Grace into his custody and to commit her body to the common jail of this county there to secure her by irons or otherwise there to remain until such time as he shall be otherwise directed in order for her coming to the common jail of the country to be brought to a future trial there."

Your young men won't become aroused when they see the state flag.
You won't have to worry about them sneeking a state flag into the bathroom to do who-knows-what.
The teenage pregnacy rate will go down.

Now take the next step.
Ban pictures in school text books where the female breast is exposed.
Ban the wearing of tank tops by women (They are only wearing them to arouse young men anyway).
Ban travel to any state that has an art museaum. You know somewhere in there a bare breast is just waiting to corrupt your young men.

I mean if your going to redo classical art do it up big. Like Texas does when it rewrites history in the textbooks.

What's next Virginia...heading over to the Smithsonian and other state museums and rework everything there? Change the state name so it doesn't so closely resemble that unmentionable word for a part of the female body? Demand that newborns be fully clothed right after birth?

From the story: "The side depicted on the state flag features Virtus standing victoriously over Tyranny, a male figure prone on the ground in defeat, his crown fallen from his head."

Hint to the copy editors at the WaPo and Virginian-Pilot: As far as I can tell from the small photo at the Huffington Post, the male figure on the AG's version of the VA seal is indeed *prone* (i.e., face down) but the dude on the state flag is *supine* (i.e., face up). Also, the "Tyrant" on the flag and official seal is apparently dead or at least unconscious, while the guy on the AG's version is propping himself up on his elbows -- beaten down but evidently still alive.

I will also note that on the state flag, Virtus wears a Phrygian cap, but on Cuccinelli's pin, she has what appears to be the red-crested helmet of a Roman centurion.

Finally, I'll point out that -- based on the small HuffPo photo -- the AG's version dresses Virtus in an "anatomically correct" breastplate complete with two boulder-holders and cleavage. NOT exactly the same as putting her in a burqa, I'd say.

But since Cuccinelli has an (R) after his name and opposes same-sex marriage, he must be the devil -- so by all means, carry on with the thoughtful analyses, people.

Posted by: ThrobertMcGee | May 2, 2010 5:57 PM | Report abuse

I forgot to add: Since Cuccinelli's pin altered not only the goddess's dress, but also her hat and the posture of the guy she's standing on, I would conjecture that perhaps the AG simply gave a staff member the unspecific instruction to "change the seal around a little bit," in order to visually distinguish the part (the Attorney General's office) from the whole (the entire government of the Commonwealth of VA).

Posted by: ThrobertMcGee | May 2, 2010 6:07 PM | Report abuse

Update: I have to retract my semi-defense of Cuccinelli's pin.

While I think he's innocent of "breast-hating" charges, it has just come to my attention that his version of the seal is NOT an original re-design by someone on his staff (as I assumed was the case) but rather is an exact copy of the flag of the Virginia 28th Regiment during the "War to Defend Legalized Negro-Ownership by Work-Averse Whites".

So, while I don't have a problem with the AG making small revisions to the state seal for his office's internal use, or with him covering up boobies to discourage snickering by schoolkids, for a modern Southern politician to revive a Confederate battle flag as a symbol of his office is a SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT MATTER.

That, and not the breast-covering, is worth getting steamed about.

No, the problem was that the moderates didn't bother showing up. All that happened were there were less die hard liberals that showed up to vote Deeds than there were die hard conservatives that showed up to vote McDonnell. The far right especially was fired up after Obama getting into office. They mobilized, the Deeds campaign was terribly run, and the centrists stayed home. Now we got Taliban Bob and The Kook, an AG so hell bent on getting his name on the GOP radar that he has yet to do anything that will actually benefit a regular old Virginian.

I am a moderate, and was no Deeds fan, but I saw what a disaster these two would be. I at least tried to keep them out.
