AU plans to be carbon neutral by 2020
American University says it plans to be carbon neutral by 2020. That means the university plans to cut emissions of greenhouse gases from activities such as heating and cooling its buildings, or offset them through other actions.
The university outlined on Friday four strategies it will use: cutting consumption; producing renewable energy; buying green power; and buying or developing offsets.
The university says it is halfway to its goal with the recent purchase of wind-generated renewable energy credits amounting to all of its annual electricity use. The school also plans to install a wind turbine and a steam turbine and use used cooking oil from its dining hall to produce electricity and hot water.
