D.C. man convicted of killing lizard

By Washington Post editors

A 43-year-old D.C. man will do 40 hours of community service, pay a $100 fine and spend one year on supervised probation after being convicted of animal cruelty charges, NBC 4 reports

The conviction stems from an incident in which Nelson Privado, angry after his son returned home late from school in October, threw the boy's pet bearded dragon Beardie across the street, killing it.

If this wasn't so pathetic it would be funny...meanwhile Ajene Jones kills a young mother also sending her 4 young children to the hospital in critical condition, because he decided he wanted to go on a joy ride under the influence of PCP. Did I say this fool didn't even have a valid drivers license...well let me say it...this fool didn't even have a valid drivers license. But here's the kicker, this was his second time being arrested for driving "under the influence of PCP without a valid drivers license." Ajene was awaiting a court date of April 28th for failing a piss test having PCP in his system...April 28th--huh. I'm thinking if D.C. Superior wasn't wasting tax payers dollars and valuable time on cases involving a man killing a "lizard", perhaps they would have had time to get this idiot off the streets before killing this woman, and damaging her four children mentally and physically for life...ya think!!!???

because everyone knows that justice should be decided through a cost/benefit analysis. (/snark)

This poor kid has no chance. Here's hoping this is a wake-up call for his dad.

Let's throw this idiot from a bridge. Great parenting. Lobotomize him.

If he had eaten it instead would that have been ok?

For all the posters pooh-poohing the importance of this case: It has been clinically shown that animal cruelty of this nature is frequently a precursor to child abuse and/or spouse abuse. Intervention and deterrence NOW is absolutely the correct thing to be doing.

Indeed, I don't doubt what nan-lynn is saying, but I am seriously interested in knowing the answer to my question nonetheless. At what point is it animal cruelty? If he ate the animal instead, would that have been ok?

Juries in SE DC aquit killers there all the time despite overwhelming evidence of their guilt.

Kudos to the prosecutors who took this seriously and pressed charges and boo to anyone who thinks crimes like this aren't worth pursuing. Animal cruelty is illegal, regardless of the species, unless a specific exception applies, and obviously there is no exception for acts of pet killing or pure vengeance and rage. Reptiles are intelligent, sentient creatures who suffer and feel pain. If he's capable of this kind of violence, who knows what he'll do next time to his son or spouse. He's lucky not to do any jail time.

A lizard won't grow up to be a thug/gang member.

YES IT MIGHT BE "JUST" A LIZARD... BUT WHERE DOES IT STOP THAT A 43 YEAR OLD MAN CAN MENTALLY & EMOTIONALLY TORMENT & ABUSE HIS SON BECAUSE HE HAD A BAD DAY...

BEARDED DRAGONS... ARE NOT CHEAP AND BIG RESPONSIBILITY... SO NEXT TIME SOMEONE UPSETS ME I CAN THROW SOMETHING OF THEIRS AROUND HIT IT OR DO SOME DAMAGE TO ANOTHER PERSON'S PROPERTY... HMMM

PCP...MORON... WE KNOW HOW THAT WORKS... PUBLIC DEFENDER & WELL THEY ARE DOING DRUGS... THEY DON'T CARE TO BEGIN WITH... GUESS DOPE USERS HAVE BETTER ATTORNEYS THAN IGNORANT DAD~

Hey people, regardless of what kind of animal it was it is still cruelt. If this had been a puppy or kitten I very doub't you would saying "How much did it cost for this criminal process. PLEASE PEOPLE, IT'S A FREAKIN LIZARD. " The law is the law. What I do agree with all of you here is why is this news worthy?

No wonder the country is full of stupid people. Stupid parents!

Posted by: melador | April 22, 2010 3:12 PM | Report abuse

This is ridiculous. Does the law apply to mosquitoes, too? DC - stop the g-damn murders instead of wasting time over reptiles.

Posted by: Trout1 | April 22, 2010 4:31 PM | Report abuse

But the 14 year old thug that murdered those kids in SE DC gets off scott free!! Kill a lizard and get punished. Kill people (in DC anyway) and walk away scott free. Damn shame.
