Fenty backs out of debate with Gray

By Washington Post editors

D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty has backed out of a highly anticipated, one-on-one debate scheduled Monday evening with chief mayoral rival Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray, Nikita Stewart tells us at D.C. Wire.

The debate has been such a hot ticket that there was a waiting list to attend. But Sunday night, the Fenty campaign told the organizers of the debate, the Young Education Professionals-DC, that the mayor "couldn't make it work."

"This is obviously very disappointing as the debate would provide a unique opportunity for Mayor Fenty and Chairman Gray to engage in a substantive, policy-oriented debate around education in the District, the likes of which we have yet seen in this election cycle," said Elise West, a spokeswoman for the group.

Stay with the D.C. Wire for more details.

You scared Fenty? Then say you're scared...

I want to vote for Fenty, but why does he have to make it so hard for me to do when he starts acting like a paranoid recluse and adopts an "us vs the world" mindset. I don't believe Gray has the moxie that Fenty has to get things done and actually achieve results. When will Fenty wake up and realize that his attitude and personality problems are going to sink his campaign?

Glad the Mayor is finally showing some humility. Everyone can tell from his interviews that his diplomatic skills are in serious need of polishing.

He doesn't have to. The Post will cover his back! Have you seen this "bama" speak in public? Can't imagine him in a debate. He will only debate if given the questions prior to the event!! And as a DC Employee I(we) are forced to volunteer on his campaign or else!! Not voting for him anyway....

Perhaps all of that booing is taking a toll. It will probably be deemed by the Fenty camp as a scheduling snafu but it will be remembered by the public as a major no-show. After the festival boos and some late evening door slams on third street in Manor Park, I'm sure that the air has been knocked out of his sail and it's only going to get worse.

King Fenty's kingdom is falling down. This is great news to hear.

shadon1 - Everyone who runs for office does it to prove a point. Gray has the intelligence and experience to actually get the job done right.

Danny7 - if Fenty had moxie, he wouldn't back out of a debate at the last minute -- on educational issues, no less - his highest priority.

Fenty waited til the last minute to back out because he has Absolutely No-thing to Say about Anything concerning the people of the District of Columbia. He don't care, he can't even lie about it. So what, his boys will protect him from showing up and/or debating any issue. Unless it's putting money in their pockets! Vince Gray has had it and so have I. Willing to campaign for Vince who has been around a long time and seen the crooks come and go.

What in the world would he say? He has to have notes just to state his name. And God knows I have been trying to inform him of the unsafe conditions at CTF and have not heard back from him or Gray. Maybe no one wants to know. Please check on your reletives if they are inmates or if they work there. It is not safe and the wardon if you can call him that does not care believe me. He called me a messy trouble maker for bringing up safety and security issues. I wish some one from the post or citypaper would contact me so we can inform the public and get some real oversight in that place. A tragedy waiting to happen for sure.

As soon as they want 2 debate about education Fenty goes and tucks his tail, he know's that the majority of DC resident's will not b votin 4 him in re-election time comes, when somebody else wins they need 2 let Rhee go right along wit him out the door, get their paper boxes ready on their desk so they can pack up and leave early, if he can't show up 4 a debate he need 2 just go now.
