D.C. mayor joins couples celebrating gay marriages

By Washington Post editors

The first gay couples to be married in the District were joined after their ceremonies Tuesday morning by Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D).

The mayor, who signed legislation to legalize same-sex marriage in December, congratulated the couples with a champagne toast and said their weddings were "a great step forward for equality and for our city that has always been a standard bearer for treating people equally and justly."

Council members David A. Catania (I-At Large) and Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), who are gay, were among the more than 100 guests who watched the three services.

Outside the Human Rights Campaign headquarters, Catania, the leading sponsor of the legislation, stood with the newlyweds and called the moment "the most profoundly rewarding day. ... I could not be prouder of this city."

Woman removed from District courthouse

U.S. security marshals escorted one woman out of D.C. Superior Court Tuesday morning after she began yelling "God wouldn't recognize" same-sex marriages. The woman had been standing in line with same-sex couples who were waiting to pick up their marriage licenses.

The District began accepting marriage license applications from same-sex couples last Wednesday.

First same-sex couples marry in D.C.

As soon as the first two couples picked up their licenses Tuesday morning from D.C. Superior Court, they ran out of the marriage bureau and headed off to become the first to marry under a new District law legalizing same-sex marriages.

Dressed in matching black tuxedos, Jeremy Moon, 31, and his fiancé, Bryan Legaspi, rushed to the fifth floor to Judge Brook Hedge's courtroom.

Hedge, a friend of the couple, performed the private ceremony in front of her staff. Within 15 minutes, Hedge pronounced them legally married.

The couple, who have been together for nearly seven years, then rushed out of the courtroom with their license back to the marriage bureau to file their license. Then they planned to return to the White House where they work in the executive office.

"I'm just so excited," Moon said.

While Moon and Legapi were being married in a civil ceremony, outside the courthouse, James Betz and Robert Hawthorne were being married by the Rev. Bonnie J. Berger, a former chaplain at GW Hospital where the couple formerly worked.

First same-sex couples prepare to marry in D.C.

James Betz and Robert Hawthorne arrived at the D.C. Superior Court early Tuesday morning -- very early.

They arrived around 3:30 a.m., seeking to become one of the first to marry under the District's new law allowing for same-sex marriages.

"We wanted to be here early for the solidarity of the day," Hawthorne said.

The couple was joined by two other same-sex male couples in line.

The two George Washington University students met when Betz, 23, guest lectured in one of Hawthorne's classes nearly four years ago. On Tuesday morning, the two pinned corsages on each other in preparation for their impending nuptials..

Hawthorne's father, Robert Hawthorne, took the train down from New York for his son's wedding. "This is one of the happiest days of my life," the senior Hawthorne said.

The couple will be married outside the courthouse by the Rev. Bonnie J. Berger, former chaplain at GW Hospital where Betz and Hawthorne once worked.

U.S security marshals, three and four together, were stationed throughout the courthouse for security.

@mrhowell2002 It's so sad that you live your life in fear of what you don't understand. God loves all of his children. His gift of love that connects two people to share their lives together is a beautiful thing. I don't question that for a second.

I wish the happy couples well, but it's a little alarming that some people seem to be glossing over the realities of marriage just so that they can be FIRST.

Straight or gay, I'm skeptical of anybody in their early 20's (Betz and Hawthorn) who makes a commitment like marriage on the whim.

The Post should do follow up stories on a handful of couples and see how many are still married 10 years later.

Why did each of them, "not" marry their dog, or their Porsche? They already had an "Egual Right" To marry anyone of the opposite sex. What they now have is a Super Equal Right, redifining the meaning of Sex and Gender.
I hope they have fun. That's all that can possibly evolve from this union. They'll never produce offspring, or anything beneficial to the earth, or to mankind. Maybe they can make movies? That would at least produce "entertainment"

What's wonderful?? What's made "Equal"?? , and to what purpose?? These people had the same right as I do, to marry anyone of the same sex. What they have now, is an "extra right" redefining the meaning of sex and gender. What can they possiblly do, or produce, that will create one Iota of benefit to mankind?? But, then, that's possibly their intent, to "Not" contribute anything, by their existence.

To anyone who posted a derogatory comment regarding these people getting married. You are probably small minded fools. As to the attractiveness of the couple you saw, there are millions of unattractive men and women who are perfectly heterosexual. I think it is completely asinine to think that someone "becomes" gay because of their level of attractiveness. If that were the case there would be hundreds of millions more gay people in the world you obtuse fool. As to gay marriage ushering in the end of the world...read your beloved bible and you will see that every single day we as a society commit acts which are described in the bible as being abominations. Having sex on your period, marrying someone who is divorced, premarital sex. Homosexuality is one of 600 plus abominations or sins described in the bible. Every day, billions of Christians commit one of these sins. Why is it that homosexuality is held up as the worst of them all, because of ignorance and stupidity. And when did marriage become a Christian institution. What if you are heterosexual and you don't believe in God or that Jesus died for your sins? Would you not be married? What if you follow a faith that does not explicitly define marriage? Why should you be forced to adhere to Christian doctrines?

BOY!! You're mean!! But, you're right. All these queers should know, and love God, because if you, or I, were making the rules, we'd be much more harsh, than God is. If we were making the laws, of God and Nature, we'd stipulate that anyone who inserts his penis into another man's rectum, would immediately contract aids, and would expire form that infection with the year. God, being much more meciful, allowed cures for aids. Humans could muster the same degree of care, or concern, for other humans. We simply don't have the capacity.

By what twisted version of logic do some people arrive at the conclusion that allowing people to marry regardless of the sex of the spouses is an "extra" right?

Nowhere in the law does it say you have to be a homosexual to marry someone of the same sex.

Given that, this means that heterosexual people and homosexual people now have exactly the same rights: they can marry anyone of either sex.

As for what God thinks or God wants regarding marriage: when, exactly, was the last time you actually spoke directly to God? Because if you've got his phone number, maybe you should be talking to him about things like genocide and poverty and worrying less about how other people who are doing you no harm live their lives.

We all have urges for things that are not good for us. I wish I could eat a half gallon of icecream everytime I crack a fresh one open, but gluttony is a sin and plus summertime is just around the corner and I don't wanna look like a fat pig. So, I abstain. I believe this greediness is in fact in-grained within me (for those of you about to say something about being "born that way (gay)"), but I control that desire.

Hell, for that matter I'd like to screw a lot of guys I meet, but I know it wouldn't be prudent for a number of reasons--so, I ABSTAIN. These couples can do the same.

Perhaps, Allah, and his followers will be more "understanding"? Ask Ahmidinejad?

One of the strongest urges of the animal kingdom, is the urge to mate, and pro-create. A lion will kill off the cubs of another Lion, in order to breed with the Lioness. The Lioness, in response will come into heat, to accomodate this urge, and to reporduce.
What can Lesbians, and Homosexuals, offer, in perpetuating the existence of mankind?
The whole answer, again, is, Nothing. These Unions, can only feed, and cannot, and will not satisfy the urges of humans. It's not, and cannot be made, "normal."

One thing I've noticed, the Washington Post have purposely put more black gay and lesbian couples on front of the newspaper to downplay the whites are the dominate race praticing homosexuality and white gays and lesbians discriminate or are not inclusive of black gays and lesbians into the white gay community.

Because the bible said a sin is a sin, and God loves all his children. My personal opinion is, if you know any gay(and you have to) you would know that no one choose to be gay. Do you believe God would make someone like that if he wasnt going to love them. I am not for or against homosexuality relationship. What I am for is HAPPINESS. LIFE IS TO SHORT TO NOT BE HAPPY AND ENJOY YOUR LIFE. So weather it last or not they are happy today and that is more than alot of people can say. I wish people would really be more involve in their own lives instead of being so concern with the lives of others. What affect did any of these couples have on your life. Dennis,

In your myopic world, Islam is the only other faith outside of Christianity. And lets be honest, Islam is just as flawed as Christianity. In fact it prohibits who a whole bunch of crap that %90 of human beings do everyday...so we would all be damned to hell if we lived by Islamic law. I think you missed my point. You and all of your bible crusaders always sight the bible as your primary reason for objecting to the homosexuality, and my point is that everyone does not prescribe to Christian values or doctrines. So on a moral level you may be right about homosexuality being a sin, but in terms of the legality or constitutionality of gay marriage, the Bible has no place in the discussion. And frankly I am willing to go toe-to-toe with anyone who wants to talk about Christianity and the Bible. I dare you to.

And to the point about procreation:
Even if everyone in the world was gay, people could still have children. Straight people have children by nontraditional methods all the time. Also, the reason why Bible crusaders love to talk about procreation as it regards homosexuality being sinful, is because of Genesis and the whole, "be fruitful and multiply". People don't take into consideration that the Bible has to be contextualized for a multitude of reasons: 1) The people who wrote the Bible were in underpopulated societies that needed to grow in numbers so they could stave off enemies 2) These were largely agrarian societies, so they needed to have lots of children to till the land. Today, we probably need less people to reproduce (we are overpopulated).

Stop the bickering with bigots here and just celebrate the day!

If a few bigots have nothing better to do than post nasty messages here, let 'em. It's all they have left.

Meanwhile, in the real world, the licenses are issuing and the marriages are happening.

funny how many angry closet cases come out of the woodwork...

Shadowsmgc, many gay people can and do recreate...DUH. The ones who are in the closet do so with a spouse and the ones that aren't can use surrogates. By your feeble excuse for logic, infertile couples should be forced to divorce.

Sorry the world is changing for the better...too bad you can't accept it. Wonder why. Ted Haggard much?

What the hell does someone's outfit have to do with anything? If a woman marries a man wearing a pants suit, are they not married.

Posted by: rochjeff | March 9, 2010 12:27 PM | Report abuse

------------------------------------------
There's only "one" difference. The woman, marrying the man, will likely bear "their children." Homosexuals, and Lesbians, will "never" produce offspring, of their own.

With all the asinine comments, where does one start? How about with the molestation comment? Really? Going there with that remark is beyond stupid. How many stories have we had about priests who are molesting little boys? PRIESTS are doing it. And yet you have the nerve to blame gays. Shame on you.
What's next? Oh yes, let's check back in 10 years to see who is still married. Maybe we should check on all the heterosexuals who were married in their churches in front of god and are now divorced. Or will be divorced. That is a worthless argument. Especially with people like John Edwards. Talk about shameful, having an affair while his wife is battling cancer and then having a child out of wedlock! But no one mentions him. Or how about Roy Ashburn? god fearing Republican I bet. HaHaHa - now he's out of the closet - he got caught riding around drunk with a guy he picked up in a bar! LOSER.
You people talk about the end of the world and how gays & lesbians can't have children. WRONG. Sorry to tell you, but even though we are lesbians, we still have children. A friend of mine just had twins. Gay men adopt the children that you heteros produce and don't want to raise. Get over yourself. This world is overpopulated, no worries on us becoming extinct people. Pull your head out of your arse.
People, church and state are separate - remember that.
And lastly, Dennis, there is no excuse for you. You are a complete arse. Go thump your bible where people actually care what you say. Idiot.

Ha ha, YOU LOST, haters! And we won -- we being all people, gay and straight, who care about justice. And guess what? You're going to continue to lose because the tide is turning in our favor.

So go on -- make Biblical threats, call people ugly, hide your hatred behind a Spanish epithet. You're just bitter and jealous because you know the world is changing and all your hatred won't stop it! :-)

Woohoo! This is a great day! Congratulations to all the happy couples!

What, exactly did you win, oldmh?
None of these couples will ever fulfill, with their Partner, what's known to be the greatest sense of fulfillment, accomplishment, and satisfaction, known to all the animal Kingdom.
They can have sex. To what benefit?
They can't decide/choose to produce offspring, without the intervention, and input of at least one other person.
I don't hate You. I have no hate for anyone, and would not hurt you. I have the same sympathy, and curiosity, for you, that I have for my relative that continues to smoke, and drink. Why would a sane person do such?

And to Dennis...based on biblical definitions and limitations on sexual activities...GOD WOULD BE OPPOSED TO ANYONE EATING SOMEONE OUT...MAN OR WOMAN

I don't know, Jeff. I'm not an authority, nor am I versed in Biblical edicts.
But, be glad that I'm not writing them. I'd likely not be as gratutious as the existing God. I wouldn't surprise you. I'd give you one warning, of things that can kill you, and if you ignored that warning, you'd die, as certainly, as you'd die if you bailed out of a plane at 20 thousand feet, without a chute. If I were making the laws, of nature, If you had Oral sex with a woman, the fact that she had Ovaries, would protect you from Aids, or other deadly infections. So, love God, he's generous, and forgiving, I may not be.

I'm surprised that a person of your name, can so easily ignore logic. I'll make it a point to "not" become familiar with the new law. I reiterate, men and women had the right to marry anyone of the opposite sex. Anyone wanting to ignore the differences between the genders/sexes, is attempting to acquire "Extra Rights." If there's no difference between the two sexes, simply ignore my comments.

Dennis,
Would a man who inserts his penis into the rectum of a woman automatically get AIDS too? Cuz last time I checked that was also "unnatural".

Posted by: rochjeff | March 9, 2010 12:43 PM
------------------------------------------
No, Jeff. I've already taken care of this little matter. Because a woman has Ovaries, she'd secrete a special enzyme, that would protect the male, should they engage in "improper" sex. Any person taking a penis up the butt, without ovaries would be completely unprotected, and vulnerable, to all possible infections, and diseases.

Hey bible folks, way to promote the stereotype that RELIGION=HATE. These people are getting married for *love*, not to breed like cattle or something. Like the bible-beating lawmakers who once disallowed interracial marriages in the name of christianity, history will look back on you as medieval minded goons that we'll all be thankful to have evolved away from some day.

Take your argument to it greatest common denominator, and what you have is the extinction of mankind.
But, then, that's probably your intent. However, that will take quite a while. In the meantime, I'm curious as to what will happen when the Homosexual agenda, collides with the increasing influx of the Islamic/Muslim religion. It should be fun to watch.

Shawdowmgc, so basically any sexual contact should lead to procreation without pleasure?
Hmmm, why did nature endow with orgasms?

Actually, if we are to follow the "nature" argument, you probably should have been eaten by a bear or something as the weaker of the specie (where strength is measured in terms of intelligence)

You're way off, ualecl. My wife and I, chose "not" to have children.
We've shared many very pleasurable erotic moments.
But these people who're celebrating their new, and strange marriages, will never have to contemplate that decision, without outside input.

The bear is in trouble, too. That is, unless he can handle a 12 gauge, or a 30.06. I'm thinking of having Bear Steak, on the grille, this summer. Send on, your bear.

I myst hurry off to my bigot meeting. Interesting that none of the gay members of the Council who forced this on the public appeared to get married. I guess they already have bent the public over enough they do not need to.

All of my friends have an EEO day where we invite all of the 'tokens' we can find into our homes and pretend we care. We are missing a one-legged, eskimo woman who is bisexual and voted for Obama. If you find one let Barney Frank know as he is this years party host.

Dennis,

How can anyone have an intellectual conversation or debate with you when you constantly shift the barometer. We were having a debate about the Bible and you are injecting your own standards and propositions. I frankly don't care what you would do...but don't throw out baseless and frankly obtuse comments without being able to back them up. I have challenged you on multiple levels and you have not responded cogently to a single one of my statements.

Dennis,

And you are clearly not well versed in Bible edicts that is why you are talking out off your a*s. Lets be real here...none of your arguments hold any water. You are not God so I don't care what you would do if you were.

Kblit,

Don't forget to sign up for the mailing list when you get there, because you will probably have a lot more meetings coming up in the near future. It's funny how you say that the council forced this down the throats of the public. Well, every single piece of legislation that expanded rights for any group of people who are marginalized was "forced down the throats of the public".Eg. When women were given the right to vote, when blacks were emancipated, when schools were desegregated, interracial marriage. If the masses had their way, most people who are considered different or inferior would perish off the face of the earth. That's why you need a select group of people to make these types of decisions. If you had taken a poll in 1954 about whether or not blacks should be able to go to school with whites, about %60 plus percent of Americans would have said no.

Posted by: rochjeff | March 9, 2010 3:23 PM | Report abuse

God destroyed Sodom & Gomorrah for this very sin. Do you stupid Americans really think that America is important to God that He won't destroy YOU for doing the same thing??? Think about this ... not everyone in Sodom & Gomorrah was a homosexual ... just tolerant of the lifestyle.
