Gallaudet to host deaf film festival

By Washington Post editors

Gallaudet University is hosting its first deaf film festival, which will include presentations by Hollywood producer Samuel Goldwyn Jr. and actress Marlee Matlin at the northeast Washington campus.

The four-day WORLDEAF Cinema Festival begins Thursday and runs through Sunday at the nation’s premier university for deaf and hard of hearing students.

Deaf actors, including Shoshannah Stern, who starred in TV’s “Weeds” and “Jericho,” will take part.

Organizers say the festival has drawn 173 film submissions from 30 countries that will be judged by an expert panel — the most submissions of any similar festival.

The festival includes deaf and hard of hearing filmmakers, as well as hearing filmmakers whose work reflects deaf themes.

Screenings are open to the public for $10.
