Officials offer sneak peek of King Memorial

By Associated Press

The group building the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall on Wednesday offered a glimpse of its progress now that construction is half complete.

Granite walls at the memorial site are engraved with some of King's famous quotations. The memorial eventually will feature a towering sculpture of King on the Tidal Basin between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials.

One of King's quotations already engraved says: "We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."

Visitors who have gotten an early look at the site include King's children, Bernice King and Martin Luther King III, as well as former Ambassador Andrew Young who was mayor of Atlanta and an aide to King.

The memorial is slated to open in late 2011.

Here's a Post video of Dr. King's head as it is lowered onto the sculpture.
