Suspicious package cleared at mail facility

By Theola Labbe-DeBose and Ed O'Keefe

This post has been updated.

D.C. Fire and EMS and MPD have given the all clear after an earlier report of a suspicious package at a mail facility at 3370 V Street NE in the District.

A 911 call for a suspicious package came in to police around 12:10 p.m. said Officer Istmania Bonilla, a police spokeswoman. The facility is near where postal workers discovered an incendiary package on Friday , according to U.S. Postal Service Sources.

But officials said the two incidents are not related.

“This is not related to anything we’ve responded to over the last few days, it’s just what we would consider an ‘eccentric mailing,’” said Pete Rendina, assistant inspector in charge with the Washington division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

“Eccentric mailings” are harmless packages sent by mentally unstable individuals who send letters or envelopes containing rambling writings or random objects found on the street for no apparent reason, Rendina said.

D.C. Fire and EMS say they are assisting the Metropolitan Police Department in checking out a suspicious package at a mail facility at 3370 V Street NE in the District.

A 911 call for a suspicious package came in to police around 12:10 p.m. said Officer Istmania Bonilla, a police spokeswoman. Members of the department’s Explosive Ordinance Unit are on the scene, Bonilla said.

The facility in question is not the same location where postal workers discovered an incendiary package on Friday , according to U.S. Postal Service Sources.

According to D.C. Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer, there are no injuries.
