Snow delays, cancels college games

By Washington Post editors

Local college basketball teams were also caught up in the traffic mess.

The Towson University men’s team never made it to Fairfax to play George Mason. The game was postponed until 4 p.m. Thursday and admission will be free.

The American men’s team left its Northwest campus at 3:45 p.m. to travel to Annapolis for a 7 p.m. game against Navy. The team didn’t arrive at the Naval Academy until 7:45 p.m. The Navy women’s basketball team, which had a 7 p.m. tip-off time at American, needed 3 hours and 35 minutes to travel the same distance and didn’t arrive for the game until 7:30 p.m. They didn’t run into many delays on Route 50. The real problems came on New York Avenue. It took them an hour and a half to go from Bladensburg Road to the 395 turnoff.

At the Verizon Center, a crowd about half the size of a normal weeknight game turned out to watch Georgetown play St. John’s.
