Stores deluged with customers

By Robert Pierre

Grocery stores throughout the area were deluged with customers trying to load up and wait out the storm. Cars were backed up in both directions on River Road, waiting to enter the jammed parking lot at a Whole Foods.

Parking lots at the Giant Food in Friendship Heights and the Chevy Chase Safeway were jammed. Cars spilled out of the Safeway and clogged Connecticut Avenue traffic. Customers at the Friendship Heights Giant exchanged weather stories and dreaded having to deal with another snowstorm.

Nicole Young, 26, of the District was loading up on comfort food Thursday at the Van Ness Giant grocery store, where customers streamed nonstop through the front door. The checkout lines looked like the day-before-Thanksgiving rush, with checkout lines a dozen deep and stretching into stores aisles.

“I plan on making chili, mac and cheese,” said Young, who shopped Thursday to beat the storm. Her basket included a box of instant oatmeal, Fritos, Triscuits and popcorn. Then she headed to the beer aisle.

“We’re going to camp inside, watch movies and eat a lot,” Young said.

Van Ness Giant store manager Miguel Melendez said business was up 30 percent. Shoppers stocked up on milk, eggs and other perishables, and Melendez said the store was being resupplied throughout the day. Staffers filled the aisles, restocking shelves and refrigerators throughout the day.

“It’s been like this for two days...since 8:30 a.m. yesterday,” said Melendez. “It will be like this until it starts snowing tomorrow. It’s hard to keep up with the demand.”

I actually did run out of milk and eggs during last Saturday's snow. Went to Harris-Teeter on Capitol Hill Wednesday and it was already very busy.

So we're covered. Omelettes galore and the dog has Greenies.
