Storms knock out power to thousands

By Erica Johnston

Heavy rainstorms swept through the area Thursday evening and knocked out power to thousands in the region, and caused some traffic headaches, utility companies reported.

Dominion Power said more than 15,000 people were without power, mostly concentrated in the Dumfries area of Prince William County. Pepco reported about 2,700 customers without service, mostly in Prince George's County. BGE reported about 5,500 without power in Anne Arundel County.

In the Lucketts area of Loudoun County, a tree fell on a car and pulled down power lines onto another vehicle. The incident sent at least one person to the hospital and shut down both lanes of Route 15, an important commuter artery, for hours during the evening rush hour.
