Volunteers to spruce up National Mall
A nonprofit tourism industry group is bringing 300 volunteers to the National Mall for a second year to paint benches and make repairs as part of a Sept. 11 service initiative.
Volunteers from the group Tourism Cares will work at 12 sites Friday, including the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial and Lafayette Square near the White House.
The group's director, Bruce Beckham, says the mall needs help. He says it gets so many visitors the National Park Service can't keep up with its maintenance.
The group also plans to present a $20,000 check to the National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum in New York.
