World Cup getting closer to Dupont

By Washington Post editors

UPDATE:
ESPN confirms that they will allow the World Cup's opening game between the U.S. and England on June 12 to be shown on giant screens in Dupont Circle.

"They don't have to come to us. They got it," said ESPN spokesman Mac Nwulu.

Fans Michael Lipin and Aaron DeNu had received approval from FIFA to host a World Cup fan fest.

World Cup step closer to airing in Dupont
9:24 a.m.

Soccer in the Circle is getting a step closer to becoming a reality.

Fans Michael Lipin and Aaron DeNu have received approval from FIFA to host a World Cup fan fest in Dupont Circle park. This approval would allow them to show at least the opening match of the World Cup, U.S. vs. England, on giant screens June 12.

Of course, there's more work to be done. ESPN, which holds the broadcasting rights, must give its consent to air the game.

that's the USA's opening game, not the opening game of the tournament.

Hopefully they have ABC7 signed on which would certainly ease the deal with ESPN since the match will be on ABC.

Keep us posted on the other games as well. US v. England is Saturday, but at least one of the group games is during the week, and a quick stroll to Dupont Circle is just the break from work I'm lookin' for. Will there be a cover?

More games being shown depends on the donations/sponsorships (it's about $20,000 to show the 3 games on June 12, includes equipment, permits, potties, etc). Re alcohol, it's not permitted in the park (for sale or consumption) per the National Park Service who manages the park. Plenty of Dupont bars would love to see people pop in between games.
