2 Va. school systems under investigation

By Washington Post editors

Two Virginia school systems are being investigated for possible civil-rights violations, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

The U.S. Department of Education says it is investigating Henrico County Public Schools to determine if it discriminates against African American students.

The department's Office for Civil Rights is seeking to determine whether the school district fails to provide African Americans with the same resources and educational opportunities that it provides white students to prepare them for post-secondary education and careers, Department of Education spokesman Jim Bradshaw said.

The investigation is a compliance review, meaning it was not prompted by a complaint. The federal agency is conducting a similar investigation of Lynchburg schools, the only other such probe in Virginia, Bradshaw said.
