Area closings, cancellations, delays
Here are some closings, delays and cancellations around the D.C. region due to snowy weather.
Public schools in Fairfax, Prince William, Loudoun and Fauquier counties, as well as Manassas and Manassas Park City schools, are closed. Stafford County schools will start two hours late, with no morning preschool classes and a half-hour delay for afternoon preschool classes. Alexandria City elementary schools will close at 1 p.m. and its secondary schools will close at 2 p.m.; all evening activities have been canceled. Arlington schools will close two hours early; extended day program will stay open until 4 p.m., but all other evening activities in or on school grounds have been canceled.
Arlington County government will close its facilities at 5 p.m.
The Reston Master Plan Vision sub-committee has postponed its meeting Wednesday until Feb. 2. Manassas has declared a snow emergency starting at 6 p.m. Vehicles cannot be parked on streets designated as snow emergency routes.
Public schools in Howard, Prince George's, Montgomery, Frederick and Carroll counties are closed. Charles and Calvert counties will close two hours early. St. Mary’s County schools have canceled after school and evening activities. Anne Arundel County schools are closed for semester break. Liberal leave is in effect for non-essential Montgomery County employees. All Department of Recreation programs and activities end at 4 p.m. University of Maryland will close at 3 p.m. Bowie State University closes at 4 p.m.
Schools opened on time, but all athletic events and evening programs, including STAY schools, have been canceled. Parents are encouraged to pick up their children when school ends instead of keeping them in aftercare.
The College Readiness Community Meeting scheduled for Wednesday evening at Eastern Senior High School has been postponed until a later date.
Trinity Washington University is closed. Catholic University of America will close at 2 p.m. All classes scheduled to begin after 2 p.m. are canceled, as are all evening on-campus events. American University, the University of the District of Columbia and Community College of the District of Columbia, will close at 3 p.m. George Washington University has canceled classes beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon and Virginia Science and Technology campuses and the university's Arlington and Alexandria locations.
In addition, federal employees will be allowed to leave two hours, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
D.C. Public Libraries will close at 4:30 p.m.
Federal employees in the Washington area may leave work two hours earlier than normal Wednesday; non-emergency workers will be dismissed two hours before they would normally leave. Emergency, or "essential" personnel must report as normal. Employees who are eligible to telework may leave early and work remotely from home or another location.
