Fire in apartment building in SW

By Clarence Williams and Martin Weil

Several residents were helped by firefighters to flee flames Saturday night in an apartment house in Southwest Washington, a D.C. fire department spokesman said.

The fire broke out in a three-story building in the 200 block of O Street SW, not far from Nationals Park.

It appeared that most of the fire was on the second floor. The blaze produced heavy smoke, and rescue personnel were evaluating several people at the scene. No cause for the fire was known immediately.
