Fired Metro driver had recently returned from leave

By Washington Post editors

The Metro driver who was behind the controls of a Red Line train that derailed at Farragut North in February had recently returned from a nine year medical leave , raising questions of whether she was given enough retraining to do her job properly, The Examiner reported Thursday.

Examiner reporter Kytja Weir wrote that two Metro workers and a union official said because of her extended leave, the driver had less than two years of train-operating experience. Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 President Jackie Jeter confirmed the operator had been on medical leave for a work-related injury until shortly before the crash.

During her absence, Metro created new policies, brought in new types of rail cars and opened new Metrorail stations. Read more of The Examiner story here.

9 years! And probably getting full salary and pesion during that time. So, 44% of her 20 years to retirement, was spent at home? When is someone going to hold metro accountable for their employees.

"Tell me...what exactly, do you do here..?"

How in the world does a person qualify for 9 year medical leave?

I have never heard of such a thing. No wonder service levels spiral downward as the costs for service spiral upward.

The worst system in the country just about by any measure.

A nine years medical leave? That's outrageous. I guess that's what our fare hikes went for.

Did they even know if she still worked for METRO? That is the weirdest thing I've ever heard in my life.

The police department policy is worse than that, but because most police departments are still majority white, they are not critiqued as much as metro or a majority black or minority company..... Bring a gun to a snowball fight and get slapped on the wrist.
