Frederick man charged in extortion case
A Frederick man has been charged with extortion for threatening to report damaging information about an unidentified victim.
Frederick police say 24-year-old Charles Kahiga Jr. was arrested Friday night after a brief chase. He's also charged with fleeing from officers.
Police say Kahiga requested a large sum of money from the victim and threatened to send “personal, slanderous, and untrue information” to police and the news media. Sgt. Wayne Trapp says the victim alerted police, who launched an investigation because of the severity of the threats.
Detectives worked with the victim to set up a money drop with Kahiga. Officers watched him take the money from the drop location before arresting him.
Trapp says blackmail cases are unusual in Frederick.
