High rate of sex abuse at Va. juvenile facilities
Two Virginia facilities are among 13 juvenile detention centers around the country that have high rates of sex abuse and victimization, according to federal officials.
A Justice Department study has found that nationwide, about 12 percent of youths held in state and local facilities reported some type of sexual victimization, the Associated Press reports.
Three out of every 10 inmates at the Culpeper Juvenile Correctional Center's long-term facility in Mitchells reported sexual abuse. At the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center, one of every four inmates reported abuse.
Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice spokesman Bruce Twyman says the agency was shocked with the results. He says it has stepped up its efforts to combat sexual abuse in the last year and a half, with increased training for staff and upgraded video surveillance.
