Zombies & healthy holidays: D.C.'s blogs
Good afternoon. Pretty ominous-looking out there. For a time there was a tornado watch for part of the area and a flash flood warning. Those advisories have since been scaled back -- but it's still a pretty ugly day all around. Tomorrow should be better. There's plenty in the blogosphere to keep your mind off the less-than-fabulous weather. We Love D.C. has the scoop on the 2010 Capitol Christmas Tree. And Beyond Bread, Bread for the City's blog, has some guidelines for holiday food donations.
The holiday season is fast approaching, and along with caring for their families, folks may be thinking of ways to share with others. In that vein, Beyond Bread asks that people take a moment before dropping off holiday donations to think about what they’re giving. It’s not that the charity doesn’t appreciate the donations, it’s just that – like many others – they’re concerned about health and the health of their clients. They offer these guidelines for healthy giving.
We Love D.C. reports that this year’s 2010 Capitol Christmas Tree is from Wyoming. It’s a first for the state in the 40 years since the tree tradition began.
It’s hard to think of an eating establishment that doesn’t have a Web site these days. But while many of them have Web sites, I’m often surprised at how many of those sites leave out basic information. I’m not alone. Johnna over at Johnna Loves Good Food has this post on “Five Things A Restaurant Website Should Have.” They might seem obvious, but you’ll be surprised.
If you’re not interested in dressing up for Halloween, but your, ahem, dog is, here’s your chance to win some fabulous prizes. Carlye Community News reports that there will be a Doggie Happy Hour Costume Competition on Thursday benefiting the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. The event will be held at the Hotel Monaco Alexandria. More details here. Or if Shirlington is more convenient, Dogma Dog Bakery and Boutique, 2772 S. Arlington Mill Dr. in Arlington, is also sponsoring a pet costume contest that evening. The Shirlington Village Blog has details.

That's it for now. Thanks for reading, and here's to better weather tomorrow. A quick note: I'll be at the Online News Association's annual convention here in D.C. tomorrow through Saturday, so this may be the last blog roundup of the week. If you happen to be there, please say hello. I always love meeting the folks behind all these great blogs.
