Lori's A.M. Buzz: Da-da-da-DA-da-da
Good morning! Partly sunny or partly cloudy? Take your pick; either way, you're going to be wearing a jacket today and that beats September, which turned out to be the hottest on record. Watch the Capital Weather Gang's forecast today to see if you're going to need your outerwear all day long.
Surf's up. While Lori's in California today, her unworthy substitute is going to torture you with a song that'll be rolling around your brain all day. It's the Hawaii Five-0 theme song, in case you didn't figure it out from the headline. Producers of the new version of the CBS show are holding a competition for college bands, who can win $25,000 for the best rendition of the theme song. The University of Maryland's marching band is a contestant; watch their rollicking video that has a message at the end -- which you'll only understand if you've watched the show. The winner will be announced next week; we'll be sure to let you know what happens. DA! Da-da-da-da-da-da.
Speaking of explosive videos: There's a buzz around some environmental videos from the UK that show what happens to bad boys and girls who don't go green. What do you think? Watch it (you may want to wait until after lunch), and then take our poll.
More school, please. D.C. Council members will hear a proposal today from Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3), who wants school to last for at least a half-hour longer each day. School hours at many District schools are from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Stay with PostLocal today to get reaction to the proposal.
Community college. It's not just a hit TV show, it's a summit. President Obama today holds the first Summit on Community Colleges, featuring vice-presidential spouse Jill Biden. Obama is expected to announce a national partnership program for employers and community colleges to work together on job training. Washington Post reporter Daniel de Vise will be there; stay with PostLocal for updates.
And more interesting stuff today:
All the crash-test ladies. Another first for today: Female dummies were added to crash tests conducted by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Which of the 34 cars were the safest in the new five-car crash test? If you drive a new Beamer, you may be pleased. Read about it on PostBusiness, and post your comments and opinions.
DWTS. If you know what that means, you probably already know what happened last night on Dancing with the Stars. But if you missed the show or you just want to read Lisa de Moraes' unique take on the performances (sample: "dreams that he must wax the floor with his teacher"), read her TV blog.
That's it for now. Lori will return tomorrow morning, and we can all sing her a rendition of Da-da-da-DA-da-da.
