R. Sargent Shriver to be remembered
This post has updated information on the Shriver funeral, which will now be public instead of private.
A funeral for R. Sargent Shriver, who died Jan. 18 at age 95, will be held at a church in suburban Washington this weekend.
A wake open to the public will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Georgetown area.
Because of the outpouring of condolences, the Shiver Family has decided to open Saturday's funeral at Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac to the public. The Mass will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Cardinal Donald Wuerl of the Archdiocese of Washington will celebrate the Mass.
Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend said Shriver will be buried in the same cemetery as his wife, Eunice, in Hyannis, Mass.
Shriver, who served as the director of the Peace Corps and leader of the war on poverty, died Tuesday after being hospitalized for several days in his native Maryland. He was 95 and had suffered from Alzheimer's disease.
