Cops: Neighbor feud led to Md. shooting

By Mike McPhate

A double shooting in broad daylight in a quiet Brandywine neighborhood on Sunday afternoon stemmed from a neighborhood dispute and left one man dead and his teenage son wounded, Prince George's County police said. It was one of a spate of shootings that left three dead and nine wounded during a 24 hour period.

The name of the victims were not released. Officer Evan Baxter said a neighbor who apparently had a longstanding disagreement with the dead man was taken into custody after the shooting and was being questioned.

Residents of the 8800 block of Charm Court told news reporters that they were aware of the dispute between the men, but never suspected it would lead to violence. One neighbor told WRC-TV Channel 4 that the shooting was deeply shocking for a suburban community that in the past has experienced little crime other than occasional graffiti.

Baxter said the shooting was reported about 3 p.m. The teenager's wounds are not considered life-threatening, he said.

We have taken violence to a whole nother level, disagrements lead to murder, murder leads to lost family members, lost mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, when grown adults act like fools, that's what our young people see and use as a means to resolve their disagrements, we ned to wake up, look in the mirrior and fix the problem, and if we are true to ourselves, we all know we're the problem.

when these shootings occur people say you need a mirror . Well that could be true but when you love your neigbor thats even better . But the fact to all this is the LACK of EDUCATION plain and simple. Im not saying these people are dum or stupid but if you knew that snake was posionous and if it bites you you will die then why would you pick it up ?

Blacks live there, right?

Saw a piece on local TV news about this event.. Looked like a nice neighborhood.. definitely NOT ghetto...

People really have to understand acceptable methods of problem resolution...

Utilizing a Glock in problem resolution usually results in some significant life-style changes > ie people end up dead.. and people end up spending the rest of their life in jail..

It's the wild west all over again.

goziner,

Blacks definitely live in Brandywine. We're proud of our city and our county. Therefore, we would appreciate if you stay in your trailer and not complicate the situation any further.

Posted by: 1911 | May 3, 2010 8:48 AM | Report abuse

1911,
I concur. I live in Brandywine too. goziner's trailer parked on their corner is probably what started the altercation anyway.

This is a tragedy and morons like terryreece and goziner have the nerve to spew their racist bile. Shame on you. A father is dead, you pigs.

Posted by: joebanks | May 3, 2010 9:03 AM | Report abuse

@ goziner, and who would happen to live in Columbine, Oklahoma City, and Waco Texas?

Posted by: DCScribe1 | May 3, 2010 9:04 AM | Report abuse

The patterns of behavior never seem to change. But, I guess, it's society's fault. As a consequence, these poor people are victims of a biased system. Well, we all know the rest of the story.

Pathetic community that will not help themselves.

@Krazijoe

And it's going to get worse. When America melts down once again, it's going to be worse than the 2008 market meltdown. Greece's situation will come to America and when it does, the Wild West will be in full operation. You think this situation was bad...wait and see.

@terryreece - I love the fact that you misspelled "dumb" in your education rant. Good one.

This is just another example of a culture that is expanding out further in to the suburbs. This is classic SE DC, NE DC, Suitland, Forrestville, Oxon Hill, and now Brandywine type behavior from uncivilized animals! I believe that these houses were rather expensive when they were built. Soon after a bunch of African American families move in to a quiet suburban neighborhood, gun fire erupts and someone is killed! Stay tuned, black violence coming soon to a neighborhood near you!

Posted by: Hotelguest0 | May 3, 2010 9:36 AM | Report abuse

To the people upset about alleged "racist" comments, I say this: This neighborhood was called Brandywine Heights back in the day. It was a very quiet suburban middle class neighborhood, (Mostly white families). Suddenly a few years ago, they cut new roads, built expensive houses, and almost every house built was purchased by blacks (99%). Suddenly the quiet neighborhood is not quiet anymore, and over-night, you started to see something you rarely ever saw before, police cars. Now, over the weekend, comes word that someone is shot and killed. I would bet $1000 that both the person that shot and the person that was shot are both black! Is it racist to identify the obvious? Is it racist to talk about a problem associated with a culture of people that is effecting the entire DC and surrounding area? 95% or better of the problems associated with violent offenses are directly associated with black people in the DC Metro area!

Posted by: Hotelguest0 | May 3, 2010 9:57 AM | Report abuse

It's all George W. Bush's fault.

Posted by: Baltimore11 | May 3, 2010 9:58 AM | Report abuse

Okay..I have to address the "blacks...african american" negative comments. Especially Hotelguest0. I am an African American whos family, many generations, has lived in Brandywine for over 60 years. Therefore it is not about blacks ruining the neighborhood. I will agree that after DC renovated their city, we started to see an increase in population and violence. And although Prince George's developement priced their homes to keep out trouble...this trouble also had the "shady" mortgage to buy the property (thus the foreclosure bloom). I think that the world needs a serious doze of LOVE!! This is a shame. It is not just here, but also there!

BTW -- What are you doing to make the world a better place? I thought so!

Posted by: Iamamom | May 3, 2010 10:11 AM | Report abuse

Hotelguest0 and other speak the truth. Of course, our self-serving, pandering politicians and bleeding heart, PC media won't say the obvious. We've observed these patterns of uncivilized behavior in so many once-quiet and safe neighborhoods. No wonder the whites continue to move away. Something is inherently wrong with people that exhibit such self-destructive behavior. The demise of the black family has caused instability and economic decline of our inner cities and now this cancer continues to move into the suburbs. Where are their leaders? Yes, we know the answer to this question, too.

Posted by: sero1 | May 3, 2010 10:18 AM | Report abuse

Dear Washington Post,
Do you all really scrutinize these comments or is this a free way to spew racist and unsolicited comment from bigots. A man is dead and a child is wounded, but yet you allow these disrectful, bigoted jerks to disrespect these families. SHAME ON YOU!! And the bad part about it is these clowns really believe that this only happens in the black community. Wow. I have a thought...Stop hiding behind your typewriters, yes, typewriters, not computers. Obviously, you are still living in the stone ages.

Posted by: rjbobby | May 3, 2010 10:22 AM | Report abuse

just one more dead person... gunned down in the suburbs instead of the ghetto...

what's to respect?? the guy tries to deal with a "disagreement" with a neighbor with a firearm?? he doesn't deserve any respect... you have a beef with a neighbor - you call the police or you see him in court..

just savages re-located that's all... the sick/self-destructive behaviour remains the same.. you just don't get it do you?? Until you do "get-it" > you're going to have to put up with all this critisism... cause there is something seriously wrong/sick with this population...

To those who made the racist remarks, does being racist come naturally to you or do you have to work at it? Do you show your true face while in public or do you hide behind the veil of being aboe to post on this site? Just curious, I know you must come across those race that you hate during the course of a normal day or maybe you stay inside your homes all day.

Posted by: MizLadee | May 3, 2010 11:31 AM | Report abuse

Well: a gun in everyone's pocket seems to be the way to go around here. Hurrah for all the gun supporters; they win, your dead. That's the problem with this self-defence argument: unless everyone is armed, it will always be a lopsided issue.

Posted by: jeanlucca | May 3, 2010 11:46 AM | Report abuse

I think the time for playing the "race card" is finally over. Telling people the truth is not racist. Only cowards refuse to accept reality and accountabilty for their situation. Until the black community understands and is willing to accept this fact, we will just see news reports like this every week. Yeah, it's sad people continue to die and suffer by such senseless violence but that's the way it is.
Why??

Posted by: sero1 | May 3, 2010 12:17 PM | Report abuse

I don't think it's proper to attribute violent acts to a certain population or demographic because if we really look at the history of the world or this great nation; predominantly acts of genocide, forced migration(against Africans and the American Indian), domestic terrorism have been committed by the majority population. Look at what occurred during the 1996 Olympics, Oklahoma City in 1995, Waco, Ruby Ridge, the Balkans, Germany, South Africa during Apartheid and now what almost happened in Times Square. The bottomline is that all Human Beings, regardless of hue, are capable of heinous acts of violence toward each other. Some of us commit mass murders while some are serial killers. Some of us try to rationalize the behavior but it's all the same - pure hatred and no particular group of people owns a majority share. There is a saying that goes like this...when values collide people divide.

It should be noted that MD gun laws are notably stricter than VA gun laws. Other than disreespect what was the argument about anyway?

What idiots! to think this only happens in Black communities...Just like the white people screw dead animals and their cousins right!? The ignorance here is overwhelming.

Do any of you hear what you are saying. What idiot started this black/white thing? It's bad enough someone was shot and killed and this is how people respond. Just yesterdsy I was looking at a new development in Bradnywine just yesterday and I thought it was pretty nice and quiet. A man lost his life and his family lost their provider. Neighbors have disagreements but GOD know this is not how it's supposed to turn out. People need to stop being so narrow minded and just wake up. This was a case of two people who did not get along for whatever reason and the other acted recklessly. I moved out of PG County 8 years agao and moved into VA....I now know why I won't come back

Posted by: kelly_randall1 | May 3, 2010 12:46 PM | Report abuse

A neighbor that shoots another neighbor is a ticking time bomb. Neighbor conflicts are typically petty territorial issues, but this guy lived across the street didn't he?

Guns are being used for more and more petty things. Lord knows what the issue was really about, but I'm quite sure this guy had issues in other aspects of his life that hinted to penned up anger and violence.

For all the folks spewing the racist bull, frankly i am more alarmed that Black people are starting to do stupid stuff typically dominated by whites. you never heard of a neighbor shooting a neighbor and it being Black folks.

Posted by: oknow1 | May 3, 2010 1:25 PM | Report abuse

No need to blame and point fingers, this should not be a forum for racist comments as if some people live in an "ivory tower" and look down on the "scum" of society. Violence like this manifests itself in all races and communities; just in different forms. VA has the MS 13, rapists, and pedophiles galore...DC has its poverty, drugs, and the ill of bad communities, MD has its crime too. Why sit back and spew your racist comments when you are part of the problem too?

Folks,

Don't get all excited about Hotelguest and sero1. Let them have another cup of TEA so they can get back to their PARTY.

The truth is that a man decided to end an altercation with gunfire. Stupid and senseless. Eight folks in Michigan are trying to convince a judge that they really weren't going to burn down those cops' homes.

Relax, sero1 and Hotelguest, the only people playing the race card is you two idiots.

Actually you don't have to address racists on this website. Fact is, these cowards are thinking with their bigot forefather's thoughts and not their own. They mindlessly spout whatever poison was programmed into their empty little heads by their coward daddies. It's in their bloodline. Every evil visited upon people of color comes from these baseless coward cave dwellers. Without the keyboard to hide behind, they would be silent lambs in your presence.

Right on, kahlua87!

They lose their jobs, homes, and security because of the policies of conservative and neoliberal politicans (Reagan, Bush 1 & 2, Clinton) and don't have the intelligence to see their real enemy. Now that Obama is in office, I think this is they're way of getting back.

Every shooting victim, every survivor of a fatal shooting should sue the hell out of people. Start with the NRA. Add in at least five SCOTUS judges and lots of these wild, wild west politicians. Sue them one at a time, not their offices or as office holders but personally.

Don't sue law enforcement. They need all the help they can get. But sue the people who did not bother asking police officers what they thought of over 3 handguns per person on the streets of this country. Sue the people who can't see the word "militia" in the second amendment.

Sue the fools who said assault weapons are okay in the hands of these sociopaths. Sue every last jerk who says their rights to own and carry guns out weighs the rights of the rest of us to live long, peaceful, firearm-less lives. And sue every media outlet or whacked out "think tank" that endorses cheap, wasted lives on our city streets.
