Discovery hostages to appear on Oprah
Hostages held by a gunman at Discovery headquarters in Silver Spring will tell their story to Oprah on Thursday.
The men will talk about being held captive by James J. Lee on Sept. 1, and how they were able to escape.
Lee, who had protested against Discovery and some of its TV shows, and who believed that the world would be better off without people, was shot by police after an almost four-hour standoff.
TBD.com reports that Oprah asks the men, "So who made the decision 'we're gonna run for it?'"
One hostage replied, "It was a mixture of signals. The guard was signaling with the police outside. And I took that as 'it's time to run.'"
"I didn't realize he was talking to the police outside via hand signals. I mouthed to the guard and I said 'run.' And he shook his head 'yes,'" said a hostage.
That is when police shot and killed Lee.
