Former Annapolis mayor Chambers dies
The first and only African-American mayor of Annapolis, John Thomas Chambers Jr., has died.
Chambers died Friday, according to a statement on the city's website. The 82-year-old served on the City Council for 14 years and served as mayor for two months in 1981. He was appointed after the position after Mayor Gustav Akerland committed suicide.
Chambers introduced legislation to make the mayor's position full time and led the fight to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a city and state holiday.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
