Frederick, Balto. County vie for SSA center
Sen. Barbara Mikulski says the Social Security Administration plans to build a national data center in either Frederick County or Baltimore County.
The Maryland Democrat said Tuesday that the center and its 250 jobs will go to either Urbana, which is south of Frederick along Interstate 270, or Woodlawn, located just west of Baltimore along Interstate 70.
Mikulski says the General Services Administration is overseeing an environmental assessment of the center's potential impact on surrounding communities.
She says the GSA is accepting public comments through Sept. 1.
The project will be partly funded through federal economic stimulus funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Construction is expected to be complete by October 2013.
