Grill started Frederick town house fire
Investigators says a charcoal grill ignited the wooden deck of an Urbana town house, starting a fire that displaced five families and killed two cats and a dog.
Frederick County Chief Fire Marshal Marc McNeal said Monday that a firefighter was treated for heat-related illness while battling the blaze, which caused more than $1.5 million worth of damage Sunday night.
He says it's not clear whether the grill somehow overturned onto the wooden deck or if it was simply too close to the railing.
McNeal says a total of 18 people are displaced. He says three town homes are a total loss, a fourth sustained moderate exterior damage and a fifth lost power.
Frederick fire displaces four families
A town house fire in Urbana has displaced at least four families and killed several pets.
Frederick County Chief Fire Marshal Marc McNeal says officials received a call about a fire on the deck of a town house on Winthrop Lane about 10 p.m. Sunday. A neighbor tried to put out the fire with a garden hose, but the blaze spread quickly to adjoining town houses.
At least four families were displaced by the fire, and firefighters say several animals died.
The fire was brought under control just before midnight. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
