Grants given for Chesapeake Bay sites

The National Park Service is handing out grant money for improvements to trails, access points and other historic or protected sites up and down the Chesapeake Bay.

The park service announced the grants Tuesday. Twelve sites will get a total of more than $670,000. The sites are in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania.

The grants are handed out every year to designated gateways and water trails that are part of the park service's Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Watertrails Network. One hundred seventy sites are eligible to compete for the grants.

Among this year's recipients are the Fort McHenry National Monument and the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum in Maryland, the Susquehanna River Water Trail in Pennsylvania and the Lower James River Water Trail in Virginia.
